August 2016 Newsletter

  • Care of Equipment
  • Keelboat Opportunities

Hello LNCS Passholders,

In this newsletter we will cover two topics:
  • Care of Equipment - photos and videos
  • Keelboat Opportunities - photos and videos
Lately,  the kayaks and stand-up paddleboards have been getting a lot of use, which is great. But we have also seen some misuse. In this newsletter we will discuss proper care of the kayaks and SUP's.

It has also come to my attention that not enough of you have heard about our keelboat programs...charter opportunities, keelboat training, and simply checking our our keelboat. Yes, we have a keelboat. In fact, we have two!

Also, b ecause August is historically a light wind month for sailing, we don't conduct Flying Scot or Sunfish Adult Learn-to-Sail classes. BUT, it IS a nice opportunity to get keelboat orientation and/or training. This training covers a lot of important information that can be accomplished without even leaving the dock/boat slip.

CARE OF EQUIPMENT

Here are a few photos and video playlists on youtube I would like you to review. If everyone makes an effort, the equipment will require less maintenance and will be more available for everyone to use. Also, keep in mind maintenance costs money which drives prices higher. So if we make the effort, we can keep maintenance costs down and pass prices low. Thanks in advance for being conscientious pass holders.

WALKING THE DOCK SERIES:  Click here to see videos about general care of Flying Scots at the dock...bow lines, cleating, halyards, fender balls, etc.

ROLLING JIBS: Often I see jibs folded and smashed into the bag and/or tied up with jib sheets like a roast going into the oven. Click here to see how to properly roll a jib.

KAYAK USE AND CARE SERIES: Kayaks are pretty tough and durable. But they donp;t stand a chance when they are dragged repeatedly back and forth. Click here to see how to properly care for the kayaks.

Avoid dragging kayaks on the ground

Sails on the Scots must be neatly rolled. If you are single-handed, find somebody to help you properly roll the sails.

This poor jib was rolled badly and then shoved into the sail bag. If necessary, take the sail off the boat and roll it on the dock. There is no need to wrap the sheets around the sail.

Each week I find bow lines wrapped around the forestay which wears through the line and also threatens the rig. If the line becomes overly worn, the boat will get loose from the dock.

DO NOT rest or drag the paddleboard on the fin. The fin will be damaged and/or will break off. Launch from the dock with the fin hanging over the edge in the water.

Remember to release the outhaul if your boat has one. This gives the sail a break from being stretched at the foot.

I'll have more and more pictures and videos about use and care of equipment. Stay tuned.

KEELBOAT OPPORTUNITIES
EXTRA! EXTRA! Real all about it. LNCS has keelboats.

Just when you thought your Lake Norman Community Sailing pass couldn't get any better...

At Learn-to-Sail classes and every time a person buys a pass or walks in the FRONT door to inquire about LNCS, we tell them about our keelboat programs. But not everyone has heard the news: WE HAVE 2 KEELBOATS AND KEELBOAT TRAINING!

Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn how to graduate up to larger vessels with more complex systems and equipment...the type of equipment you'll need to be comfortable with if you plan to go on a charter.

Classes
LNCS offers two types of keelboat classes that are conducted (generously) on privately owned boats. Click here to learn more or to register for the next class.

Lake Norman Keelboat 101
Next class Aug 27-28
Charleston Keelboat 101
Next class to be scheduled

Cruising
LNCS also owns a Hunter 25 named "MacKenBri" that is available to qualified Pass Holders.

(LNCS also owns a Colgate 26; we are integrating the Colgate into our programs)

Charters
For the past two years LNCS has sponsored charters on the Chesapeake Bay. This charter fills up fast so keep an eye out for the 2017 schedule. This past year, LNCS conducted training and then chartered three late model, 37 foot Beneteau's!

Raft-Ups
We have had two keelboat raft-ups for Pass Holders so far this year. This gives you an opportunity to take a tour of the keelboats and meet some really nice people.

To get on the email list to stay apprised of all upcoming keelboat activities, email [email protected] to be added to the distribution list.

In summary, we have a lot going on at LNCS. Your pass is becoming MORE valuable as we add more and more opportunities. Please enjoy everything LNCS has to offer. Let us know if you have questions.
