A service of Celebration for the Life of
Dr. Rev. John Deckenback,
Conference Minister of the Central
Atlantic Conference
The Rev. Dr. John R. Deckenback died Tuesday, 19 July 2016 at the age of 69. He was spiritual leader and chief executive of the Central Atlantic Conference, United Church of Christ, and a native of Cresskill, NJ., where his grandfather was pastor of his childhood church.  John was married to the Rev. Carolyn L. Roberts, pastor emerita of the United Church of Christ of Seneca Valley in Germantown, Maryland. They have two sons, Jeffry (married to Emily) and Aaron (married to Kate), three grandsons, Will, Charlie, and John, and a granddaughter, Lillian.
Before coming to the Central Atlantic Conference, Dr. Deckenback was on the staff of the United Church of Christ's Northern California Nevada Conference for 20 years. Shortly after graduating from seminary, he also served as an Associate Minister of the Orinda Community United Church of Christ in California.
In the 1980's John was one of the co-founders of the Conferences of the United Church of Christ Insurance Board, which provides property and liability insurance to UCC and Christian Church (Disciples) congregations. Twice in the 1990's, he served as the Insurance Board's Acting Executive Director during transitional periods. He was the current chair of the Board.
Through the Church and his service on the board of International Relief and Development, John traveled extensively - particularly to conflicted areas around the world where there are substantial numbers of refugees. He was also a Trustee Emeritus of Lancaster Theological Seminary.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11 AM at the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701. Rev. Dr. Barbara Kershner Daniel will officiate. The interment of his cremains will be private. Contributions may be made in Dr. Deckenback's name to the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ at the above address, to the Central Atlantic Conference or the United Church of Christ General Synod '17; both charities can be mailed to 916 S. Rolling Rd. Catonsville, MD 21228 or by visiting http://www.cacucc.org/ . Arrangements by the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, Frederick .

Children's Sermon for July 24
(based on Luke 11:1-13)
Needed: bag of balloons( the big, round ones work best both for ease of inflating and visual impact.)  Theme: Jesus wants to stretch out hearts to make them big like His.   Note: Make sure you stretch your demonstration balloon beforehand  so it's easier to inflate.  Ask kids if they've ever played with a balloon.  Talk about how fun it can be to hit a balloon around with a couple other people.  Then say you've brought a balloon and would like to hit it around with the kids.  Take out (un-inflated) balloon  and try to play around with it by bouncing it around with the kids.  Doesn't work. Say that this is how the balloon came, but it becomes what it is meant to be by being blown up.  Demonstrate by putting some puffs into the balloon to make it bigger.  Then let  the air out. This balloon represents my heart--it's nice, but it's not what it's meant to be.  In today's Bible reading,  Jesus talks about how important it is to pray.  Praying is like letting Jesus "blow" the Holy Spirit into me.  Demonstrate by blowing up balloon again.  When I pray and pray and pray, Jesus stretches my heart so it become big like his.   Tie off balloon.  When my heart becomes big like Jesus', then I can bring joy to others.  Demonstrate joy by bouncing around balloon with kids.  Then give each child a balloon to re mind them that Jesus wants us to pray regularly so He can stretch our hearts.

The UCC is offering assistance to
West Virginia flood victims

United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries is looking for assistance to help the people in West Virginia recover from historic floods. Thousands are facing a prolonged cleanup effort following deadly and devastating storms that swamped much of the state last week, and the UCC will be there to help long-term.
"We will be working closely with the Ohio Conference, West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and other organizations to help coordinate and support the long-term recovery efforts, and will need funds and volunteers to support that work in upcoming months," said Zach Wolgemuth, UCC Disaster Ministries executive.
Thousands have been left homeless due to the widespread floodwaters, dumped by a series of storms on Thursday, June 23. Twenty-three people have died in the disaster, the nation's highest death toll from flash floods since May 2010, when 27 people died in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi.
The UCC Ohio Conference is already delivering 600 cleanup kits and 300 hygiene kits to the area, and has requested additional kits from Church World Service. Wolgemuth stresses that while the UCC is not engaged in the actual clean-up work, Disaster Ministries stands ready to provide funding to fill unmet needs and gaps in services.
"While UCC Disaster Ministries focus is on long-term recovery, we keep a close eye on early response work and provide financial support to groups and organizations experiencing gaps," Wolgemuth said.
Torrential downpours, which brought as much as 10 inches of rain, wiped out entire areas of the West Virginia countryside, sweeping away homes and flooding structures, washing away roads and cutting off power to thousands. The National Weather Service called it a '1-in-1,000 year event,' and President Obama has declared the state a disaster area.
Financial assistance should be sent to Penn Northeast Conference, 431 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, PA  18071 - clearly marked for West Virginia Flood.
Future opportunities to volunteer can be found on the Disaster Ministries Website:    http://www.ucc.org/disaster_disaster-volunteers

with Martha Spong. Save the date on February 14th with a snow date of February 21st. We will gather at St. John's Fullerton from 9 a.m. until 3.
Power and Place in Women's Stories" will take a deep and wondering look at the stories of the women who anoint Jesus, as well as where we figure in our own stories.
Mark tells a story in the macro; the woman has revolutionary social courage, performing a political action with global implications. Why, then, in Luke, is her nature changed, her act reduced to subservience, her action's place in the gospel changed entirely? Here we learn what the powers do by misdirection. Then in John, written later, we find the story in the micro - a family story, still subversive, with the previously anonymous act carried out by a known quantity. And what of Matthew's villain?
We will look, too, at our own lives and place ourselves in our stories.  Where have we been subversive? When have we needed courage? Who do we call villains? Why do we let others tell our stories for us?
Martha Spong is the Executive Director of RevGalBlogPals and a pastor in the United Church of Christ. A writer and a clergy coach, she has served churches of various sizes and situations as both an interim and settled pastor. The editor of There's a Woman in the Pulpit: Christian Clergywomen Share Their Hard Days, Holy Moments and the Healing Power of Humor (SkyLight Paths, 2015), she is currently at work on a book telling her story of living faithfully with a chronic illness.
