Your Regional Chamber Connecitons

Minneapolis Chamber 1 2 Bloomington Chamber 3 4 Northeast Minneapolis Chamber 5 6

LETTER FROM THE INTERIM PRESIDENT
It remains an active time at the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Minimum Wage
On Wednesday, the Minneapolis City Council Committee of the Whole met to consider placing a proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour on the fall ballot. Presented as an amendment to the City's charter, the proposal was advanced by a citizen petition to the charter commission.

The Minneapolis City Attorney provided an opinion last week to the City Council stating that the proposal should not be placed on the fall ballot, concluding that "the minimum wage charter amendment is an ordinance disguised as a charter amendment.  The City's Charter does not permit legislation by initiative. Accordingly, the City Council should not place the proposed charter amendment adopting a $15 minimum wage on the November 2016 municipal ballot." Our Chamber agreed with the City Attorney's opinion and we urged the members of the City Council to follow her sound advice.

Ultimately, the members of the City Council voted 10-2 to follow the City Attorney's advice, meaning the minimum wage proposal will not be placed on the fall ballot.

The City Council did direct staff to develop a process for stakeholder participation in an ongoing discussion about a minimum wage increase through a city ordinance and report back to the Council with a proposed process by October 15th. The City Council directive contemplates the Council taking some type of action on minimum wage by the end of the second quarter in 2017.

The Minneapolis City Council will meet on Friday, and we will continue to monitor this situation closely. Proponents of the $15 minimum wage have said they will take legal action to attempt to reverse the City's decision and require the matter to be placed on the November ballot.

Minneapolis Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance
We continue to work with Minneapolis City officials on lingering issues relating to the recently passed earned sick and safe leave ordinance. We hope to guide businesses in providing generous levels of benefits while also ensuring they will not have to change existing plans to comply with every specific requirement of the ordinance.

To learn more about the earned sick and safe leave ordinance, consider attending our Chamber Town Talk on August 18th from 8-9:30 am at Jax in Northeast Minneapolis. Our speaker will be Ryan Mick, a partner at the Dorsey law firm, who has worked closely with the Chamber and other business groups throughout this process and is a leading expert on the ordinance. Click here to register.

For those of you who can't attend the August 18th event, we are working on some future informational and training seminars to inform our members on the steps they will need to take to comply with the Minneapolis ordinance. Look for more information on those seminars and training sessions in future editions of Connections.

U.S. Bank Stadium Opens
Also on Wednesday, U.S. Bank Stadium officially hosted its first sporting event, the international soccer match between Chelsea and AC Milan. Chelsea won 3-1 and Minneapolis scored big points with visitors from around the world who were in Minneapolis for the match. I've heard nothing but positive comments about their downtown experience.  I think it's safe to say we wowed them!

If you haven't been inside the stadium yet (or if you have and would like to return for a special chamber event), please join us on August 16 for a U.S. Bank Stadium Breakfast and Tour. Click here for more information and registration.

A Preview
Over the past several weeks, I've met with several businesses and nonprofit organizations who have expanded their operations in Minneapolis and are leading the way on talent attraction and retention. Look for more information in my next column in Connections.

As always, thank you for your ongoing investment in your Chamber.
