Message from Dr. Rose Mary Shaw,
Director of the Mindfully Well Center
Welcome Summer: Pitta
The Heat of the Day!
Please join me in greeting the full expression of the summer season. I just returned from 10 days of living in nature, close to the depths of the Mother Earth in the Grand Canon, to reaching her heights in the Rocky Mountains.  As I learned during this journey, we want to be conscious of the Pitta heat in all forms of it's expression. Below, we present various tips for managing your Pitta. Yes, even the Vata and Kapha type must be weary of the intensity of the heat this time of the season.  We want to naturally keep Pitta under control by planning our activities around the cooler times of the day and drinking plenty of fluids, while cultivating a sense of playfulness and relaxation. The second class of our FREE Summer Series will take place Friday, August 19. We will focus on specific Summer Transition Tips and explore cooling recipes and drinks.

We must also be  conscious  of the change of season. MWC  will  be  offering  the Fall Panchakarma Detoxification &  Rejuvenation  program in October. Stay tuned for more information to come. We invite you to enjoy our Summer & Fall programs.
                               Stay cool and peaceful!

                      Someone Prepared This Mighty Show

Some one prepared this mighty show
To which without a Ticket go
The nations and the Days --
Displayed before the simplest Door
That all may witness it and more,
The pomp of summer Days.

YOGA:
Ayurvedic Summer Suggestions

As Jean Farkus told us in June , being in nature is the next best thing for the mind and body; in particular brain health.
For more information check out this website.

We suggest taking your yoga and meditation out of doors.

Dr. Vasant Ladd, BAMS, MASc, world renowned ayurvedic physician suggests:
(1) Ayurvedic Sunbathing.

Take a 10-to-15-minute walk at sunrise,
when the gentle rays that fall on your face
and skin will stimulate sadhaka pitta,
according to ayurveda, is a mood lifter similar to serotonin and melatonin and promotes creativity and joy.
(2) Aromatherapy
Sandalwood essential oil is useful in cooling your summer heat/Pitta. Suggested use includes: Dab one drop of sandalwood on your temples, eyebrow center, throat center (at the hollow of the throat), wrists, and belly button.
(4) Soothing Summer Meditation
Start your day with a spiritual practice that involves honoring the sun: surya namaskara (sun salutations); . . .  and a walk at sunrise to absorb the early morning rays while reciting the Gayatri mantra, the Vedic song of sunlight.

Nutrition: Cooling Summer Suggestions

Late summer
season brings the lush full expression of the Fire & Earth element. Strada von Soon, Ayurvedic practitioner, suggests this action can  serve to invigorate our creativity and assists us in manifesting our insights and desires.
She offers food  advice aimed at
maintaining the proper function of the digestive fire:

(1) eat light foods - fresh fruit, vegetables, rose yogurt lassi,     buttermilk, lime, avocado and light grains such as basmati rice.

(2) Prepare food and teas using orange peel, cardamom, rosemary, fennel, cumin, coriander, anise, licorice, dandelion, chamomile and chicory.

According to Ayurveda,
. . .
it is crucial during the rutu sandhi (the junction of change from one season to the other) to be more conscientious of our actions in order to adjust properly to the external change. As we leave the heat of the late summer and move on to the coolness of fall, daily regimes of self care become more valuable . . . including achara (nutrition), vichara (yogic contemplation) and chary (...daily routine). Adherence and attentiveness to these rituals optimizes biological adaptation and reduces the likelihood of doshic imbalance and disease.
