JEANNE GANG PROPOSES CONCEPT FOR POLIS STATION
Architect Jeanne Gang has a plan to reimagine isolated, police precincts that could house a barber shop, a garden, a gym, and lounges with free wi-fi-all designed to draw community members to hang out in stations and eventually build friendlier and more trusting relationships with the cops sworn to protect them. The concept for Polis Station, as its called, was shaped around a 2015 report on 21st Century Policing by a task force convened by President Barack Obama. "It made me think, are there ways design can help improve the relationship between community members and police if we look at the architecture?" COMING SOON: JOFFREY BALLET ON NAVY PIER
A $500,000 plan to add sophisticated, diverse and authentic programming, encompassing nonprofit arts and culture, history, environment and community organizations, to Navy Pier (Marilynn Gardner) may bring ballet dancers to the pier in the near future. Informal conversations with a handful of groups have already taken place according to Michelle Boone, former commissioner of cultural affairs and special events for Chicago, who on August 15 starts as Navy Pier's chief program and civic engagement officer. The Board of Truck Hero, Inc, an over $500MM operation, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and part of TA Associates private equity portfolio, is seeking a board member. The key criteria includes:
  • Big company experience
  • Manufacturing experience that is similar to THI's: involves batch processes, aluminum and fabric integration and purchasing, fast turnarounds
  • Someone working currently in manufacturing is a plus; would consider a CEO/COO that came up through manufacturing

Robin  visited five companies and labs to highlight successful companies making products in Illinois, and to promote technology training and modern manufacturing jobs in the 2nd District. "My tour proves that fine products are being made here, and I'll continue to encourage increased investment in local manufacturing. The key to long-term economic growth in our region is having a highly-skilled workforce, so we need to encourage more young people - and minorities - to pursue technology or manufacturing careers and find the most effective ways to train them," said Robin Kelly. CURESEARCH FOR CHILDREN'S CANCER RELEASES SUMMER 2016 IMPACT REPORT
Every six months, CureSearch for Children's Cancer ( Laura Thrall and Christine Bork) produces a report on the impact it has on children's cancer research.  It's part of the commitment to transparency and accountability.  The Summer 2016 Impact Report highlights scientists who have tested six new therapies for high-risk brain cancer. And, most excitingly, one promising new therapy for Ewing Sarcoma is nearing clinical trials with the potential to save children's lives.
