Intro to the BIT
Presented by Aaron "Chip" Reese, Ed.D., NaBITA President; Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Columbus State University; and Erin Halligan-Avery, Ph.D., Administrative Director of Student Health & Counseling, Lauderdale Health Center
While the concept of behavior modification is not new to higher education, the development of Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs) to address concerning and escalating dangerous behaviors is a relatively new practice. By tearing down silos of hidden information and reporting persons of concern, through the gathering and analysis of data by a caring and trained team, and then utilizing proven intervention strategies, we can deescalate dangerous behavior, and we can prevent what is preventable. Participants in this session will gain an understanding of the basic operations of a BIT, be introduced to the fundamental tools needed, and explore team membership and structure for developing an effective Behavioral Intervention Team.
