Simone Biles - A GrAND Success Story
With the Olympics two days away, we look at how
Ron and
Nellie Biles took their granddaughter,
Simone, from a 6-year-old passionate about gymnastics to an Olympic Gold hopeful.
When Simone's biological mother started using hard drugs and alcohol, her grandparents intervened, traveling from their home in Houston, Texas, to Columbus, Ohio, to get their grandchildren out of foster care. The Biles' story is one of love and perseverance. The underlining lesson, illustrated in how the family overcomes obstacles, is that we're stronger together. Read the profile.

Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Colson Whitehead's
Underground Railroad, the latest selection of Oprah Winfrey's book club, chronicles the life of a teenage slave named Cora, who flees the Georgia plantation where she was born, risking everything in pursuit of freedom, much the way her mother, Mabel, did years before. In
Underground Railroad, there's a kind of prologue that recounts the story of Cora's grandmother Ajarry, who was kidnapped in Africa, sold into slavery and repeatedly swapped and resold in America; and Cora's story is intercut with interludes featuring portraits of other characters, like the slave catcher, Ridgeway, and her friend, Caesar. -

Think Intergenerational - Funding Opportunities
Kids Run the Nation Fund. The Kids Run the Nation Fund, an initiative of the Road Runners Club of America, awards grants of $500 to $1,000 to U.S. nonprofits and schools that are interested in implementing or currently have a youth running program. Since the goal of the grant program is to have kids running at least once a week for multiple weeks, funded running programs should offer more than just one-time events. Deadline: Oct. 1, 2016. Fund for a Just Society. The Unitarian Universalist Association awards $6,000 and $8,000 in grants to nonprofits in the U.S. and Canada that address issues of social and economic justice. Quote
"My grandparents...valued traits like honesty and hard work. Kindness and courtesy. Humility; responsibility; helping each other out. ...America has changed over the years. But these value my grandparents taught me - they haven't gone anywhere. They're as strong as ever."
~President Obama, who turns 55 tomorrow.
