Springhill Natural Playground Update
Accessible natural playground near completion
The Springhill Accessible Natural Playground is near completion! All play structures/features are functioning and usable. The final phase of the project includes the installation of the bridge. Official opening of the playground is anticipated in September.
 
The sod surrounding the playground has recently been laid. There is a gentle reminder to residents using the new playground to please remain off the sod until it completely matures. Adult supervision is recommended.
Cumberland Energy Authority Partners with EfficiencyOne
Study will help to determine savings using geothermal energy resource
The Cumberland Energy Authority is pleased to announce a new partnership with EfficiencyOne. The aim of this partnership is to seek technical assistance to analyze the energy and cost savings realized from the use of geothermal energy in Springhill, Nova Scotia. The study includes an energy audit of five participating facilities, to identify further potential energy cost saving opportunities. The new partnership initiates the Phase 2 Geothermal Study in hopes of better understanding the geothermal resource potential within the former Springhill mines.

Municipality Committed to Dealing with Illegal Dumping
Illegal dumping case results in conviction and fine of $459.50 
The Municipality has recently concluded an illegal dumping case involving an illegal dump site in the County, which resulted in an individual convicted and fined $459.50. This fine helps to cover the Municipality's costs to clean up the site.

The Municipality has been working with local residents and businesses to reduce the number of illegal dump sites in the County. If you come across an illegal dump site, please contact us.
Coast Guard Called off Pugwash
Coast Guard attending Pugwash Harbourfest rescues local Springhill resident and Director of Finance at the Municipality, Andrew MacDonald
On July 23, the Pugwash Fire Department received a report that a sailboarder was in distress nearby Heather's Beach. Local Springhill resident and Director of Finance at the Municipality, Andrew MacDonald, had been operating the sailboard and was blown several kilometres off the shoreline and was drifting towards North Port. MacDonald was rescued by the Coast Guard. Visitors to the area during the Pugwash Harbourfest were fortunate enough to watch the events unfold.

Richard Calder Arena - Ice Update
Ice at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre expected to be ready by the end of August
Staff at the Richard Calder Arena at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre will be turning on the plant to make ice on August 8. The ice is expected to be ready for the last week in August. The Jr. Blues training camp will open the first weekend in September.

Andrew MacDonald - Director of Finance

Andrew has primary responsibility of overall administration of the finances of the Municipality, including financial operations and controls, systems, records, reporting and analysis. He oversees operations of the Finance Department and develops a team that is customer service and community proud, results oriented, highly motivated and engaged and supports a healthy and safe work environment.

Andrew's responsibility include:
  • Coordinating the annual operating and capital budgets;
  • Providing financial reports that facilitate decision-making and measure success;
  • Developing financial policies; and
  • Multi-year forecasting and analysis to ensure financial sustainability.

Ray McCormick & Sons Ltd celebrated 60 years in service
On July 26, Ray McCormick & Sons Ltd, held their 60th anniversary in business, and customer appreciation day. This took place at their Rodney Service Centre with a large crowd in attendance. At the same time, Garry McCormick celebrated his 75th birthday.

Fraser sisters named to Nova Scotia Legion team
Denver and Gabby Fraser, from Advocate Harbour, have been named to the Nova Scotia Legion team for their events in track and field.  
 
Last year Gabby won a bronze at the national legion meet.  Both have won numerous provincial high school medals, their latest being gold for gabby at the triple jump and gold for Denver in the long jump. Gabby also set a high school record in triple jump.

Dexters Construction has started laying pipes for the Pugwash Water Supply System
Councillor Al Gillis is excited to announce that the first phase of the Pugwash Central Water Supply System is underway. Dexters Construction has begun installing a water transmission pipeline from the wellfield to the Village, as well as distribution piping on the streets within the Village. This phase of the project is anticipated to be substantially completed by March 31, 2017.
