Dear Friends and Neighbors,
 
"We love the Fun Run!" That sentiment was evident as everyone gathered for this beloved annual tradition on Queen Anne. Families, neighbors, business teams, serious runners, and casual walkers alike completed the 5.5 kilometer (3.4 mile) course, cheered on by volunteer crossing guards, SPD officers who kept everything orderly and safe, and hundreds of bystanders. A tradition for many more years than we can remember now, the annual Crown of Queen Anne, Craig Wilson Memorial Fun Run/Walk took place Saturday July 9th under partly cloudy skies and perfect temperatures.

Over 580 people participated, raising $33,000 for the Helpline to help us keep families in their homes and continue providing a safety net to so many neighbors who are experiencing hardships.
We are so appreciative of the MANY MANY individuals and businesses that helped make this happen. Heartfelt gratitude to every one of our amazing volunteers - this would not be possible without you! Special thanks to Krijn de Jonge, Helpline Board member and event chair. He is the wizard behind the curtain making sure every last detail is taken care of. Big thanks also to volunteers Christopher Togawa, Ann Pearce, and Beamar Huetter. Stacey Wilson generously donated her brother Craig's old truck - it was somehow comforting to see that truck driving around Queen Anne picking up and delivering for the Fun Run again. Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Metropolitan Market, City Eye Care, and Queen Anne Chiropractic donated water and food. Many generous businesses donated raffle items including: Christopher Togawa/CTIA, Brooks Running, Queen Anne Dispatch, Cupcake Royale, Blue Highway Games, Deja Parrent Tranquility Massage, Sprocketts Used Bicycles, Paragon Restaurant, Homegrown Sandwich Shop, Mimisan Spa, and Bustle. Amazing photos were provided by the very talented Marty Perlman and the really cool aerial photos were provided by Tim Baker of Dravus Aviation.

Monique Ming Laven, KIRO7 News Anchor, was our fabulous guest announcer providing wonderful humor and commentary during our awards ceremony - we were honored to have her join us this year. Many thanks to Queen Anne Lutheran Church for so generously hosting us every year - we could not do this without the use of their facilities.

Magnolia Summerfest!

We are super excited this year to be participating in Magnolia's annual Summerfest the weekend of August 5, 6, and 7. As Magnolia is one of the communities we serve we are happy to have the opportunity to have a booth there this year. Volunteer Spotlight -- Susan and Tom Susor 
 
  Sue and Tom learned about the Helpline through their participation in Queen Anne Rotary. QAR is a very small club (9 members) that meets at 10 Mercer. Soon after they joined the club, Lisa Moore came to speak about the Helpline. Sue says, "Lisa's presentation was like a worm dangling in front of a fish. We were hooked! Tom and I appreciate that the organization assists clients in keeping their dignity. Whether it is providing extra funds needed to pay rent and utilities, 'dressing them for success' as they go for a job interview or extending the week's groceries, Helpline IS the helping hand. We love being a part of the larger community of volunteers as we cheer for those who participate in the annual 'Fun Run,' enjoy the Taste and its Golden Raffle, wish those who buy Christmas trees Happy Holidays or pack bags at the weekend 'Food for Kids' evenings. We know that our time is being given to a local group that assists those who may be our neighbors."

TEGNA/KING 5 who recently awarded us a $5,000 general operating grant in recognition of our local efforts to prevent homelessness. We were a unanimous choice for this grant -- quite an honor and a wonderful acknowledgement of the impact we are having in our communities. This money will help up to 125 families, seniors, and others stay in their homes.
Muckleshoot Charitable Fund for their generous $5,000 grant to support our work. We are deeply grateful and will put this grant to good use providing housing, basic needs assistance, and case management services to help the growing number of people who are experiencing hardship.
Church of Scientology for collecting and donating 120 pairs of men's socks! We always have a need for new men's and women's socks so this was a very timely and helpful donation. We so appreciate the effort and thought they put into this donation!

Often, once a person gets behind in bills it can take quite a while to catch up and stabilize, even when that person is doing all the right things.
 
Two years ago Timothy, a single dad with two kids in school, came to us because his rent had just increased over $300 per month. His income at the time was in no way adequate to pay that rent, so we helped him pay his rent, as well as some move-in fees when he found a cheaper apartment to move into a few months later.
 
A year after that he contacted us requesting rent assistance. At this time he was working part-time and going to school; he was receiving some financial assistance for his schooling (which helped pay for living expenses) as well as getting food stamps. But he was still coming up short for rent, so we helped him again.
 
One year later (July of this year), he called to say that he had completed his schooling and was about to start a new job in his field. He was very excited! Since he would not receive his first paycheck for several weeks and he needed to pay rent now, we helped him once more.
 
Over the course of two years, with a relatively small investment, we were able to stabilize Timothy and his kids, enabling Timothy to focus on finishing school and landing a new job. He feels confident he will no longer need to request assistance from us.
