Dear Friend of Jefferson Center,

At Jefferson Center, our vision is a community where mental health matters and care is accessible to all.  As your community mental health center, we always seek better ways to serve you--our clients and our community--with creativity and a sense of energy. We know that in order to fully meet the needs of individuals and families we must provide innovative services, easy access and whole health approaches to care. I am pleased to announce our latest innovation, the Jefferson Plaza Family Health Home, a collaboration with Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN). See the article below for the exciting details.  We simply could not pursue these advancements without your support. Together, we will continue to build a healthy, thriving community. Thank you!!

Double Duty: 25 Tips for Caring for Both Mental and Physical health
"Without mental health, there can be no true physical health." - Dr. Brock Chisholm, the first Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)

It's becoming increasingly more common to talk about mental health and physical health together. And, as Dr. Chisholm stated, you really can't have one without the other.  Both mental health and physical health make up a person's overall wellness. (Technically, there are seven dimensions of wellness, but we'll get to that another time.)

Poor physical health can lead to increased risk of mental health problems. And vice versa - poor mental health can negatively impact your physical health, leading to an increased risk of some medical conditions.

Not only is it important to think about physical and mental health as one overall, whole health with your primary care doctor and therapist; it's also important when considering your own self-care routine and habits.

Just the Facts:  Co-occurring Conditions
When two disorders or illnesses occur in the same person, simultaneously or sequentially, they are described as either comorbid or co-occurring. People with co-occurring physical and mental conditions represent a significant portion of the population. Comorbidity is associated with elevated symptom burden, functional impairment, decreased length and quality of life and increased costs. Collaborative, integrated care models that use a multidisciplinary team have been shown to provide effective treatment for co-occurring mental and physical health conditions.

Employee Spotlight!  Introducing...
Mindy Klowden

The Office of Healthcare Transformation, what exactly does that mean?

Our team stays on top of healthcare policy and trends and brings that information in to help guide Jefferson Center's strategy with the changing healthcare environment. We also do a lot of work in the areas of integrated behavioral health and primary care, including helping to sustain and grow our collaborations in this area and providing both internal and external consulting and training.

How important is integrated care for the future of behavioral health?

Our healthcare delivery system is separated into different pieces and the result has been limited access, poor health outcomes and continued stigma around mental health and substance use disorder treatment. In order to better serve our patients , we need to be integrating behavioral health and primary care and also working to improve coordination across all other systems and providers.

What's your go-to for stress relief when you're not working?

W hen I am not working I am probably out hiking, camping, cross country skiing, dancing or kickboxing! And of course playing with Cody, my adorable and smart soon-to-be 7 year old.
