HIGHLANDS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF LIFE!
by Jay Mooney, Executive Director

August 9, 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the first children entering the opened doors of Highlands Children's Home, soon after known as Highlands Child Placement Center and Maternity Home.

Assemblies of God COMP ACT Family Services will celebrate the great ministry, story, and future of Highlands over the next year. Successful Highlands ministry continues, but we rejoice over God's redeeming love to almost 3,000 young ladies served and more than 800 adopted children through the first 50 years of this life-changing ministry. Such grace deserves great celebration!

A fitting beginning to the celebration is sharing the Highlands story!

(The following story is taken from a collection of historical records.)

Danley Mansion donated in 1964
30-Room, Danley Mansion donated in 1964
In 1959 the General Council of the Assemblies of God adopted a motion encouraging the Department of Benevolences to "broaden its program of child-care through the establishment of child-placement and adoption agencies at such a time as deems feasible and practicable." The adoption of this motion was the beginning from which developed the Highlands Child Placement Service from the Benevolences Department of the Assemblies of God.

In 1964 Highlands moved a step closer to reality when a thirty-room, three-story stone mansion in Kansas City, MO was deeded to the Assemblies of God by Mrs. D. G. Danley. Naturally the home required refurbishing and furnishing to make it suitable to the needs of child-care. Health and safety requirements of state, county, and city welfare departments had to be followed carefully in order to ensure the safety and well-being of each child. So Highlands began because of the obedience of an elderly woman who felt a call of God. She donated her lovely, three-story home. Named because of it's original geographic setting in Kansas City, Highlands was soon to start.
In preparation for school, our COMP ACT student's need tangible back to school items like shoes, clothing, and supplies.

Would you consider sending the needed items, an offering designated for "back-to-school", or gift cards that will allow our staff to purchase the specific items?

Gifts cards to the following stores are widely appreciated: Walmart, Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears, American Eagle, TJ Maxx, Ross, Children's Place, Old Navy, Shoe Carnival, Visa

BRAND NEW BIBLE
When our children step onto our campus, one of the first things they receive is a brand new Fire Bible with their name imprinted.  This is something made possible through Light for the Lost.  We have on hand a supply of Student and Kid's Fire Bibles.  Occassionally, we will have a child who is not old enough to read yet and in those cases, we provide children's picture Bibles.

Recently, one of our 3 yr. old residents made it clear to a few staff members that she needed a Bible with her name and couldn't wait to get one.  The day it arrived, when told she had a surprise, a new Bible was one of her first guesses and a huge smile came across her face when she found out that hers was ready.

On the same day, our campus had a visiting team from Oklahoma and we shared with them the story of this young one receiving her new Bible and the joy it brought her.  A small child who was with the visiting team, at the conclusion of the tour, approached one of our staff and pulled cash out of his pocket.  He stated very clearly and firmly, "go buy another kid a Bible."  We learned that this young man had brought that money for him to participate in a fun activity while he was in Hot Springs and he made the decision himself to use the money towards some Bibles for our kids.  It was a very touching thing to witness a child purchasing a Bible for another child.

We ask you to pray that our kids will read this Word of God and apply it to their lives in their day to day choices; not only while in our care, but after they leave as well.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105

HILLCREST STUDENTS SUPPORT SPEED THE LIGHT

In 2015 students at Hillcrest were not only the benefactors of missions giving.  They gave generously themselves to missions ministries in the U.S. and abroad.  Vision, challenge, and leadership is sometimes all a student needs to do something life changing for others and themselves.

Last year, Hillcrest students gave a total of $4,770 to Speed The Light, a student-led missions program of the Assemblies of God.

The plaque seen here was presented to COMPACT at youth camp this summer.
PICTURES OF GOD'S GRACE
Summer time at COMPACT Hillcrest campus is filled with the goodness of God. Guest speaker's on campus, summer camps with the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God, weekly ministry at First Assembly of God, and other events having eternal impacts. Many children and youth learn of saving grace of Jesus Christ, embrace His invitational love, and are born anew in the Spirit. Here are a few pictures of God's great grace in summer services.
