The August Beacon
Olivia Wilhite
New Face(s)

Mason United Methodist Church would like to welcome our new Co-Directors of Children and Youth Ministry Olivia Wilhite and Margo Gislain.

Olivia J Wilhite
Co-Director of Children and Youth Ministries
Olivia feels excited and blessed to be welcomed into the Mason family in order to serve the children and youth. She is a student at University of Puget Sound, where she is studying Politics & Government and Mathematics. Olivia is a born-and-raised Methodist from the wonderful state of Oregon, and found her passion for working with children and youth through her own incredible experiences with 7 years and counting in United Methodist Camping Ministries.  In her campus community, Olivia is an Interfaith Coordinator for the Department of Spiritual Life, an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta, a member of the Habitat for Humanity Club, and an advocate for quality coffee and quality naps.

You might have seen Margo in the nursery on a Sunday morning.  She's been working with the little ones for the past few months.  Here is some more information on her.

Margo Gislain
Co-Director of Children and Youth Ministries
Margo is a first year student at the University of Puget Sound studying biochemistry and neuroscience. She was born and raised a Methodist just outside of Chicago, Illinois, and this is her first year in the Pacific Northwest. In her spare time, she participates in the school radio station, and loves seeing live music and going to plays or musicals. Over the summer, she's a camp counselor with the YMCA.

Next time you see them, help them feel welcome.  They already have some great ideas cooking.  We know they will be a great addition to Mason!

Save the Date
Join Pastor Stephanie this Fall for an exciting new study opportunity! Since 1987, Disciple Bible Study has reached nearly 3 million people worldwide, introducing the grand sweep of Scripture in a 34-week format. Now Disciple Fast Track maintains the integrity and principles of the original study, but its modifications can better meet the needs of a hectic world. Participants still receive a thorough introduction to the Bible, but in almost a third less time.   We will meet together on Wednesday mornings from 10 AM - 11:30 AM from September 7 - November 23 (for the Old Testament) and January 11 - April 5, 2017 (for the New Testament).  There will also be an evening opportunity on Sundays from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM from September 11 - November 27 and January 15 - April 2.  Each class must have a minimum of four participants. Look for sign-up opportunities soon!
Looking Forward to October
Mason U Presents...

Public Faith in Action: How to Think Carefully, Engage Wiseley, and Vote with Integrity  by Miroslav Volf and Ryan McAnnally-Linz.  Published by Brazos Press.  Available at major booksellers including cokesbury.com.

Book Club coming in October!  Look for the date in next month's Beacon.
From the publisher: "Christian citizens have a responsibility to make political and ethical judgments in light of their faith and to participate in the public lives of their communities--from their local neighborhoods to the national scene. But it can be difficult to discern who to vote for, which policies to support, and how to respond to the social and cultural trends of our time.  This nonpartisan handbook offers Christians practical guidance for thinking through complicated public issues and faithfully following Jesus as citizens of their countries. The book focuses on enduring Christian commitments that should guide readers in their judgments and encourages legitimate debate among Christians over how to live out core values. The book also includes lists of resources for further reflection in each chapter and "room for debate" questions to consider."
A July Recap
Goodbye July

  2. Katherine Parker's presentation on 7/30 went very well and had an enthusiastic audience of 40+.  Word is the ice cream wasn't bad either.
