Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference Abstract Submissions Are Now Open: Share your success story, share your knowledge and energize the attendees with the latest in proven tools, analyses and methodologies to improve healthcare operations. Submit your abstracts now for the opportunity to present at the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference 2017.

Abstracts for oral presentations are due by Aug. 31. Poster presentations are due Sept. 16.

Third Annual SHS Student Simulation Competition--Submission Now Open!
  
Entries are now being accepted for the 3rd Annual SHS Student Simulation Competition sponsored by FlexSim. Gather a team of four students (maximum) to solve a "real-world" healthcare situational case study using FlexSim's simulation software. Your team could win the first place prize of $2,500!

Each team will have approximately nine weeks to develop its solution for preliminary judging. Three teams will be chosen to compete in the finals in Orlando, Florida, at the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference March 1-3, 2017. The winning team will be announced at the conference. Each of the three finalist teams will receive $1,250 for travel to the finals, cash awards, complimentary conference registration and certificates. Entry forms for the fall session of the competition are due no later than Sept. 30, 2016. Don't miss this chance to show off your skills and reap the "awards."

Society for Health Systems Scholarship
Sponsored by Parallon Workforce Solutions
Available to undergraduate students enrolled full-time in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada and Mexico, provided: (1) the school's industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IISE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering and operations research with a definite interest in the area of healthcare. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000. A candidate for this award must:
  • Be an active Society for Health Systems student member.
  • Have an overall point-hour average of 3.00 on a scale of 0-4.00.
  • Be enrolled full-time, as defined by the student's university.
Students may not apply directly for the scholarship. They must be nominated by IE department heads, IISE student chapter advisors, IE faculty or by SHS board members, SHS diplomates or SHS senior members. Applications must be received at IISE headquarters on or before Dec. 1 and include:
  • A transcript and resume or CV including statement of career objective.
  • Three letters of recommendation reinforcing applicant's contributions to the industrial engineering profession in healthcare.
  • Statement of Interest in Healthcare describing candidate's contributions to, or experience in, industrial engineering in healthcare
  • A three to five page original essay supporting the theme "IEs in Healthcare: Improving Processes in Healthcare."

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Hospital Flow Professional Development Program has put together a compilation of Hospital Flow factors, case studies, and findings.   Review this presentation to see strategies for hospital flow and system optimization. 
Tracking Cancer In Real Time

California is the first state to begin building an up-to-date database to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. California public health officials say they will be able to generate real-time surveillance statistics, identify cases for ongoing research and implement a statewide program to improve the quality of cancer treatment.

David Fones is a Management Engineer at Universal Health Services in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. He has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and is an ASQ certified Six Sigma Black Belt. David is a wonderful addition to our Early Career/Young Professionals Committee because he is looking to network with other Young Professionals, learn more about the healthcare industry, and gain exposure to other performance improvement projects in healthcare. In his spare time David enjoys skiing, golfing, and spending time with his pets, family, and friends.

We do this through understanding our member's  needs and seeking industry leaders to share their knowledge with our membership network of students, young professionals, mid-careerist, and experienced professionals.  

Committee members meet online monthly to plan and deliver these educational offerings including webinars, podcasts, conference sessions, and regional networking events.
