 Quote of the Season

The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color. Often at night there is lightning, but it quivers all alone.

As we begin to wrap up summer, let's focus on the children. Those of us who have children are most likely spending more time with them and perhaps observing habits that are not stellar. One habit that seems to be prevalent is improper posture. I blame technology for the increase in adolescent postural deterioration.  More than ever our youth spend hours in front of video games, televisions, computer screens and are bent forward texting on tiny cell phones.  The days of going outside to play with other children in the neighborhood are being replaced with sedentary interactions on various electronic devices. Technology is not only affecting our next generation's posture, but their interpersonal skills too, as the social networking phenomenon is unfortunately a daily ritual for our kids. This has given rise to physical inactivity and inadequate body positioning.  When we see our children hunched over computers and phones, it generates parental frustration.  We may tell them to sit up and stop slouching which works for a few minutes, but then it's back to business as usual.
A few helpful hints to help combat this problem would include having the children sit on a large exercise ball when they are using the computer or in front of the television gaming.  Balancing while sitting on the ball prevents poor posture and strengthens important para-spinal musculature.  Also, have the children lie over the ball face-up for one minute in a reversed arched position to offset the forward posture.  Another posture enhancer would be having them retract their shoulder blades for a sixty second count, three times per day. Specific chiropractic adjustments help restore proper posture and prevent further deterioration as well.
Proper posture helps our bodies stay healthier and allows internal organs and nerves to work more efficiently.  When posture is poor, it places unnecessary pressure on the spine and the major organs located in the front of the body (heart, lungs, and colon).  As you sit reading this article, slouch forward and feel the pressure that generates on the anterior part of your body and the spine.  Please realize that poor posture can be caused by other conditions too, such as scoliosis or congenital defects.
As the children get ready to head back to school, consider a comprehensive spinal evaluation to prevent postural deficiencies and to assist in reversing poor posture and improper body mechanics. Also, consider limiting activities that promote poor posture and insist that your kids become more physically active.  Next time you visit our office, ask one of us for an exercise booklet that will not only help the children, but you as well.

Yours in Health,

Patient in the Spotlight: Kevin Dowe

The past several years I have had neck and back pain from car accidents and poor posture during work (long hours in a car.) The pain causes me to not be able to do things that I enjoy doing, like working out,
Kevin Dowe
golfing, and being active with my family. I was continually told that I needed surgery or medicine. I wanted to start chiropractic because I understood that the body benefits naturally from it without any harm or side effects. A friend at work recommended the Chiropractic Health Center of Glastonbury because he had similar issues with his neck and back. Coming here was the best decision I've ever made. From day one I experienced benefits. Through treatment, my pain went away and now I am able to do the things I enjoy fully, without restrictions. I a m b ack working out full time, playing golf without pain, and enjoying it all.
I have never felt as good as I do now. Since starting chiropractic care, the staff has been nothing but informative, helpful, and courteous. I will continue to maintain my health through chiropractic for a long time. Dr. DeFrancesco is very knowledgeable and continues to ensure that I am understanding the process. He is incredibly friendly, as is the office staff. I would recommend the Chiropractic Health Center of Glastonbury to anyone seeking a natural way to health and wellness!
