Science Action Club is a high-impact STEM learning experience for middle school out-of-school time programs. Through games, projects, and hands-on activities, youth investigate their local environment and use citizen science to document discoveries, share data, and design strategies to protect our planet.
September 19th in Bend
The STEM Mentors Toolkit Training will introduce the online resources included in the free mentors toolkit. Participants will practice utilizing tools to help in the process of finding, vetting, and working with STEM volunteers.
CS Fundamentals is elementary school curriculum that allows even the youngest students to explore the limitless world of computing. Courses blend online, self-guided and self-paced tutorials with "unplugged" classroom activities that require no computer. Each course consists of 20 lessons. Contact Susan Hamann if you are interested in organizing or participating in a training this fall.

National Conference on Afterschool & Summer
The National Summer Learning Association joins School's Out Washington to present,
October 24-26 in Seattle, WA
This three-day national convening will bring together the nation's top thinkers to share and discuss the partnerships, policies and programs that are breaking down traditional notions of when and where learning occurs. CLICK HERE to see the newly released workshop schedule.

Female Racing Icon featured at World of Speed
Female
role model and auto racing icon, Lyn St. James will be speaking
at the World of Speed museum on Saturday August 13th. As the first female to ever receive Rookie of the Year, Lyn St. James brings an inspirational story to life for young women and auto enthusiasts alike. She will be giving a
lecture starting at 2pm,
followed by a book signing.

Centro Cultural Hosts White House Officials
On July 14th, one Oregon program was lucky enough to host a White House Official as part of this years efforts to raise awareness for National Summer Learning Day. Established in 1972, Centro Cultural de Washington County is the oldest culturally specific Hispanic organization in Oregon serving large numbers of Latino residents. Centro fills an important role in their community as an all-purpose hub where people can access services, attend classes and be connected with resources of all kinds.
Most recently, Centro Cultural has had an additional focus on engaging middle school youth, supporting local high school leaders in the community, utilizing the afterschool model to support academic skills and providing summer learning programs for youth. As part of the White House's efforts to recognize the importance of providing engaging summer learning opportunities, Centro hosted the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics,
Alejandra Ceja.
During the visit, White House officials took time to meet with local high school students, toured the center and spoke with Centro Cultural staff about some of the other opportunities they offer. Centro's Executive Director, Maria Caballero-Rubio, spoke about a new emphasis they've identified to serve middle school age youth and how they are utilizing summer to engage youth in a new arts-based program. Centro will help pilot a service learning based curriculum for middle school youth that includes components of STEM, service learning and career exploration within the context of the youth's community.
Before departing, Alejandra was excited to share about the opportunity that Centro Cultural has to become a White House Bright Spot in Hispanic Education, an initiative that highlights programs across the country who are supporting Latino educational attainment and excellence. We were thrilled to share about this opportunity and look forward to sharing more good news about the amazing work Centro Cultural continues to do in Washington County. Read the full story HERE

Exploring STEM Municipal Conversations
OregonASK is going on the road again to build awareness around
the importance of bringing STEM opportunities to all students. Working with local STEM Hubs and their partners we are
convening a conversation about Oregon's draft STEM-CTE plan with local municipal leaders, workforce board representatives and program's that provide STEM. We will also be discussing how each region may provide a more coordinated system of support for informal STEM learning.

Digital Badges & Competency Based Education
After a year long parternship working on our second Mozilla Digital Badges grant, OregonASK took a team to the
Competency Based Education & Digital Credentials Design Convening in Denver in July. The team of industry, education and community based partners enjoyed going through a two-day Facilitated Design Process with
IDEO.
Several new ideas were discussed and multiple plans were put into action, including a burgeoning relationship with Business Education Compact (BEC) and current efforts they already have underway.
This fall, BEC is offering workshops around the state on
The ABCs to Increase Student-Centered Learning
. This
series of trainings will target teams from the district office, schools and
after school programs in learning how to develop quality alternative credit models. Participants will focus on the
extracurricular activities and after school programs that their districts offer to support student
engagement.
