President's Message
JA brings critical learning to today's education landscape
Robin Wise
I enjoy shopping, and I love a good sale. Marketers see me coming from a mile away and do a fabulous job of tempting me with a darling handbag, a sassy pair of shoes, or a new golf club. After all, I NEED them, and look how much money I'll save, right?

At JA, we talk a lot about needs and wants. In fact, our elementary school programs all weave the theme throughout the curriculum to help students understand the difference. It's a simple concept, but if we are honest, there are a lot of times that it can be hard to tell the difference - even for adults. So the question becomes: What is critical and what is simply "nice to have"?

Take economic education, for example. When we look at lessons in budgeting, self-sufficiency, and entrepreneurship, we don't often see these topics taught as core components of school curriculum. But ask yourself these questions:
  • Do you regularly make financial decisions?
  • Do you work or have you worked?
  • Do you work for or with a business?
  • Now, do you believe these concepts are adequately taught in our schools?
Time and again I've heard educators say that they'd love to teach these topics, but they don't have the time or money and, compared to English and science, teaching self-sufficiency and financial literacy skills is not an existing school priority. As one recent high school graduate told me, "I know a lot more about how monkeys spread viruses than I know about taxes."

Showing students how money, careers and business ownership work is more than a school priority, it is a life priority. I am so proud that we were able to impact a record-breaking number of students last year; however, there are still far too many students and schools who do not have the opportunity to benefit from JA.

Research proves that JA is not just a "nice to have" program for select students at select schools; rather, JA is proven to provide critical knowledge and inspiration that ALL Colorado students NEED. And, it's up to all of us - JA staff, volunteers, educators and funders - to make it accessible.
JA Proves Impact
Third party research has proven that JA programs change students' perceptions of themselves and their worlds in a way that helps them become more successful as adults.
JA alumni:
  • incur less debt than their peers
  • are more optimistic about achieving future success
  • start companies at rates 2½ times higher than the general population
  • secure employment at higher rates than their peers
  • have a positive view of our American economic system
  • earn 20% more than the general population
  • are more likely to be better off than their parents
  • have a 93% high school graduation rate
  • are 30% more likely to have a 4-year degree than the general population
None of this is possible without our volunteers who bring JA's results-driven programs to life each year. We are confident that, by working together, we can help every student - no matter what life circumstance or background - feel in control of their destiny. Read more in the just released JA Impact Report.

2015/16 JA Bowl-A-Thon Raises More Than $1 Million for JA-Rocky Mountain
It's no surprise that the JA Bowl-A-Thon is JA-Rocky Mountain's largest fundraiser of the year and a top team-building opportunity for corporations in Colorado. Imagine thousands of business professionals teaming up for an afternoon of fun and friendly competition to raise money to help JA provide financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurial programs to local students.

The 2015/16 Bowl-A-Thon season wrapped up in June, raising a total of $1,046,982! The top ten fundraising companies are:

Each bowler raises money from friends, family and colleagues. The teams then come together to celebrate their hard work by bowling with their co-workers. And many companies don't just bowl; they host bowling pin decorating competitions, employee costume contests and other fun events to help increase awareness and enthusiasm for the JA Bowl-A-Thon within their organizations. "With the support of their employers, many local professionals find it easy to participate and to help raise money to bring financial education to students across the state,"  said JA Special Events Manager Justin Hazlett.

In addition to the companies that support their employee bowlers, several Colorado businesses also sponsor the event, providing in-kind donations to be used as JA Bowl-A-Thon prizes and incentives. These partner companies include:

AMF Pepsi Beverages Company
Chipotle Roma Restaurant
Denver Outlaws SportsShares/Suitehop
FirstBank Smashburger
Home Advisor Southwest Airlines
Le Peep Waterway Carwash
