Hi There!

I can't believe it is already August.  Summer is coming to an end and kids will be back to school in just a few weeks.  Well let's enjoy those last few days of summer with some great eating, shopping and fun things to do.

I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter.  As always, if there is something you want to ask or need more information on, I would love to hear from you.  I can be reached at [email protected].  Until next month, enjoy the last weeks of your summer!

Shop Downtown Redwood City
Captain's Sk8 & Barber Shop

Captain's is an independently owned and operated Sk8 collective and barber shop   located in downtown Redwood City. Captain's proudly offers a unique shopping experience for anyone interested in hard-to-find lifestyle brands, or traditional barber services.

Captain's retail selections are largely fueled by the skateboarding, music and motorcycle industries, as well as American-made and handcrafted products. The shelves are stocked with exciting brands you won't see at every mall or chain store and the apparel selection is often infused with handcrafted goods from local artists, metal smiths, photographers, welders, etc.

In addition, the Barber Shop is like stepping back in time to a true community gathering place, a throwback to the classic barbering experience with a modern twist.

The owner who's been skateboarding since the 80's and his hairstylist wife bring years of real-life knowledge and passion to the industries housed under Captain's roof.

Dining Out

Venture to the Mediterranean right here in Redwood City at Zadna Restaurant. Their shawarma wraps and sizzling entrees are genuinely authentic and delicious. Shall I tell you about their famous shawarma wraps first? These hearty lunches can be made with marinated meats like beef or lamb or a combination of both! Another option is their juicy kebab platters, which offer marinated skewers of beef cubes, charbroiled lamb, or a minced medley of the two. Vegetarians can enjoy their veggie specialties, such as falafel crafted with seasoned ground garbanzo beans, hummus, and zesty tahini sauce. They also present a vegetable medley of eggplant, cauliflower, and green bell peppers in a basil sauce. Zadna is a unique dining experience where you can watch your meal being prepared right before your eyes! Be sure to check it out.

Up next at the Dragon Theatre: Wild Boy by Oliver Goldstick

Based on the critically acclaimed memoir "Not Even Wrong," "Wild Boy" tells two stories - that of Paul and Jennifer Collins, who learn that their toddler may be autistic, and that of Peter "the Wild Boy," an 18th century boy found mute and feral in the woods by King George I. Written by Oliver Goldstick, "Wild Boy" looks at what it really means to be human.

Runs Thursdays - Sundays July 29 - August 21st. Tickets available at  Dragon Theater website

Theater Way Street Closure
The Community Development Department and Fire Department have been concerned with the high amount of pedestrian activity and potential conflicts with vehicle traffic on Theater Way. To address the safety concern, which is heightened due to people walking in the roadway, the City has temporarily closed Theatre Way to vehicle traffic.

With the removal of the median, cinema drop-offs may now occur on Broadway, in the loading zone adjacent to the Broadway and Theatre Way intersection. Emergency vehicles will have access to the street.

Stanford Speaker Series

New York Times best selling author, Julie  Lythcott-Haims spent a decade as Stanford University's Dean of Freshmen, where she was known for both her fierce advocacy for students and her equally fierce critique of the growing trend of parental involvement in the day-to-day lives of college students. Her New York Times best-selling book "How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success" draws on research, conversations with admissions officers, educators, and employers, and on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean to highlight the ways in which overparenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping Lythcott-Haims offers practical alternative strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success.
