CALLING ALL GOOD NEIGHBORS

The City recently debuted a new brochure that is designed for good neighbors, just like you. It's called The Good Neighbor Guide, and it provides Rancho Cordova residents with facts about City requirements, helpful tips and services, and key contact information.

You can find this new brochure on our website , at City Hall, at the many City-sponsored events in our community, and in your mailbox later this month.
EPPIE'S GREAT RACE CHAMPIONS

The City of Rancho Cordova entered a three-person relay team in Eppie's Great Race on July 16th, and they won first place in the public sector division, competing against five other teams for the honor!

Congratulations to our team: Krystle Judish (biker), Mark Dumford (runner), and Brad Findlay (kayaker). We couldn't be more proud!
VSP DAY OF SERVICE

In July, seventeen interns from Vision Service Plan's (VSP) Business Program volunteered their time to help a Rancho Cordova resident in need. Andrew McBride, a homeowner in the Cordova Meadows neighborhood, desperately needed help cleaning out his front and back yards. The 83-year old veteran, who is legally blind, had years of trash piled up in his backyard, and the interns filled up a dumpster with the debris.

"I really can't find enough good words to tell you how appreciative I really am," said McBride to the volunteers. "I've been a volunteer all my life, but I've never been on the receiving end of something like this. I let this mess get way ahead of me."

BICYCLE SAFETY INSTRUCTORS NEEDED

The 50 Corridor Transportation Management Association is recruiting bicycle ambassadors to teach bicycle education for both adults and children.

Training is conducted through the America League of Bicyclists' certification program which consists of more than 50 hours of classes and drills. Graduates of the program become League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) and are qualified to teach clinics and classes on all aspects of cycling, from maintenance to lane positioning to bicycle tourism.

POOL SAFELY

Drownings are the number one cause of accidental death for young children. But YOU can take simple steps to save lives.

The City of Rancho Cordova is an official Pool Safety partner with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Pool Safely campaign was founded by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act). The act takes its name from Virginia Graeme Baker, a seven-year-old girl who drowned after she was trapped under water by the powerful suction from a hot tub drain.

Here are ways you can ensure safety of children when they're in and around the water.
  1. Never leave a child unattended in or near water.
  2. Teach children how to swim.
  3. Teach children to stay away from drains.
  4. Ensure all pools and spas have compliant drain covers.
  5. Install proper barriers, covers and alarms on and around your pool and spa.
  6. Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
  7. Spend one minute taking the Pool Safely pledge! Adults pledge to follow the safety steps noted above, and kids pledge to follow steps such as never swimming alone and to stay away from drains.
  8. Download the new Pool Safely app "The Adventures of Splish and Splash" and help your child learn what to do (and not to do) in and around pools and spas. The app is available for download from the App Store or Google Play.
  9. Read up on Steps for Safety Around the Pool available in English and Spanish.
For more information, visit the Pool Safely website or contact the City's Building & Safety Division at (916) 851-8760.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB SUMMER CARNIVAL

What do snow cones, hula hoop contests, and carnival games all have in common? They were all part of a free end-of-summer carnival for local kids, put on by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento! The carnival was the final event of a free five-week summer camp, which included arts and crafts, sports, and local field trips. Interns from Cordova High School supported the program while learning important career skills for their time in high school and after.

Adreana Rubio, Coordinator at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento, led the summer camp program with the goal of creating a welcoming space for students to express themselves.

"I feel having a program where kids can truly express who they are is important," said Adreana. "After-school programs give kids that liberty and help them discover their talents. I think that's the magic of the Boys and Girls Club."
