NAHB Calls on Trump and
Clinton to Focus on Housing

NAHB Chairman Ed Brady today called on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to make housing a priority during this election season.
Appearing in a live segment on CNBC's "Closing Bell" on the floor of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Brady said: "We're here to support housing. We're bipartisan. We know housing is an important part of the economy. We want to make sure whoever wins [the election in November] that housing becomes a national priority."
Brady added that NAHB has discussed housing finance reform and other issues that are important to the industry with both the Trump and Clinton campaigns and that the NAHB leadership will also be attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia later this month.

2016 Second Special Session
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Please consult your tax professional on possible tax changes regarding your business.  Although many measures were defeated by the legislature, changes were made regarding the inventory tax credit and the state capital gains deduction.   Many of the changes take effect immediately or on returns filed on or after July 1 st  regardless of the return's tax year.

HB 11 by Rep. Shadoin and HB 38 by Rep. M. White reduces the amount of the individual income tax deduction for excess federal itemized personal deductions.  This legislation reduced deduction rates on itemized deductions including mortgage interest and property taxes.  HB 38 had many amendments and the bill changed every step of the process.  LHBA opposed this legislation.   HB 11 did not pass out of committee and HB 38 failed on the House floor. A nay or absent vote was a vote with LHBA.  View the vote on HB 38 HERE

SB 6 by Sen. Morrell makes changes to the inventory tax credit.   The $10,000 refund threshold was increased to $500,000.  Eligible business with up to $500,000 in inventory tax can now receive all of the refund.  $500,000 to $1,000,000 tax liability will have 75% of the credit refunded and the rest can be carried forward.  Taxpayers with liability above $1,000,000 will have the first 75% of the $1,000,000 refunded and the rest can be carried forward.  This applies to returns filed on or after July 1st regardless of the return's tax year.  LHBA monitored this measure.  SB 6 passed and was signed by the Governor.

SB 10 by Sen. Ward makes changes to the inventory tax credit for manufacturers.  If the amount of the tax credit exceeds the amount of tax liability for the tax year, the excess credit is carried forward up to five years. This applies to returns filed on or after July 1st regardless of the return's tax year.  LHBA opposed the original bill but removed the opposition after it was heavily amended.  This bill passed the legislature and is now Act 5 after being signed by the Governor.

HB 50 by Rep.  Montoucet  originally reduced by 50% the individual income tax deduction for net capital gains.  This legislation was amended to reduce the capital gain only on the sale of a business.  The rate depends on number of years in business.  This act applies to transactions on or after June 28, 2016.  This bill was also passed and signed by the governor.

BUILD-PAC'S NEW "FAIR SHARE" PROGRAM

BUILD-PAC's new Fair Share campaign is the easiest way to get involved in the political process. We are asking every member to do their Fair Share for the housing industry by contributing just $25 to BUILD-PAC during the 2015-2016 election cycle.

What would happen if every NAHB member did their Fair Share?
If every member does their Fair Share and invests a minimum of $25, then BUILD-PAC will be a $3.5 Million PAC. This would allow BUILD-PAC and housing to have an even greater impact in the 2016 elections.

What is my Fair Share going toward?
Your contribution helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates who will support our issues and fight for housing in Congress.

How can I help with the Fair Share campaign?
Please help your state meet its goal. During your state and local meetings back home, ask your peers to do their Fair Share for housing by contributing just $25 to BUILD-PAC in this election cycle. If every member does their Fair Share, then BUILD-PAC's voice will be LOUDER and STRONGER than ever before.
