"First impressions are the most lasting."
This old English proverb is quite true - we frequently form an opinion or have a reaction at the very first sight of someone or something, often subconsciously. The first impression of your home - otherwise known as curb appeal - is no different. If your home is lacking the desirable appearance you long for, there are solutions that will leave you, your visitors and neighbors with a more pleasing and memorable first impression.
Recently, two clients came to us with requests to enhance the exterior of their homes. Both built in the 1940s, the quaint homes needed fresh makeovers to suit the changing aesthetics of the neighborhood.
The first home's main entrance was transformed with a larger front door, side lights and an updated portico with sizable columns. The enhanced entry complements the front porch addition which includes a second doorway leading to a new mudroom. Dated box bay windows on the first floor were removed and a dormer over the garage was replaced by a raised roof with two double-hung windows. The additional space now accommodates a Jack & Jack bath. Adding to the allure are galvanized standing-seam roofs and half round gutters. This rejuvenated home, shown above, will radiate dramatic and welcoming curb appeal for years to come.
The second 1940s colonial exterior was re-imagined with updated accents and details. The tired portico was replaced with a copper standing-seam shed roof which flatters the original copper bay windows. Shutters and siding were removed and the house was clad with cedar shakes to give the home a broader appearance. The garage portion of the home was torn down, redesigned and rebuilt to accommodate a new first floor mudroom, family room, powder room and larger garage with a spacious playroom above. Creating a focal point for the addition, the cupola provides light in the newly built interior space. The enhanced look of this colonial will be inviting and interesting for many years.
