August 2016
Next New Volunteer Orientation Scheduled for September 20

So many of our new volunteers credit current volunteers as the person who told them about our volunteer opportunities.  If you know someone who might be a great addition to the House, please have them contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or at 317-267-0605, ext. 225.

Additional information can also be found using this link:   RMHCCIN Volunteer Opportunities

Pop Tab Boxes Are Back!

Cardboard pop tab boxes are available once again.  These small containers are a great way for collectors to promote the program. They can be obtained in the front office or desk at both Limestone or at the RMH at Riley.

Changes in the House... and Basement
As some of you may have heard or noticed, there have been quite a few changes happening around the House.  Here are the highlights:

Resource Table

We now have a resource table positioned next to the apartment area entrance.  This will provide our houseguests with brochures, flyers, cards and a guide to  various resources throughout the state.  It also includes a local resources booklet that highlights nearby venues, such as restaurants, grocery stores, entertainment and hotels.  Other than the local venue booklet, guests are free to take any of the documents on the table.

Bulletin Boards

We are looking at streamlining where guests will be directed to access information such as sign-up sheets for tickets, upcoming events and House notices.  Moving forward, we will need your help in ensuring that new guests are familiar with the board.  Please stay tuned for updates.

The Basement

If you haven't been to the basement in a while, you may notice some changes. In the past couple of weeks, we have taken time to review what items have been stored in our food pantry and on our hygiene supply shelves.  We are working hard to make sure that we are following best food safety practices and being good stewards with donations, which means that we are checking on what we have done well and where we need some tweaking.  With the extra efforts of volunteers and staff, we have been able to go through our shelves to update them. Shortly, we will have some guidelines on processing these donations, so I'll be sure to get you the new guidelines soon!

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to help.  Krystyna Karr,  [email protected] or at 317-267-0605, ext 210.

New Volunteer Opportunities

In House Family Programming

The purpose of this position is to support the overall wellness of families, both adults and children, who are currently staying at our Limestone Street location. Wellness programming focuses on ways to support social, mental/emotional and physical health.

Working with our Program Coordinator, Krystyna Karr, you can help develop and lead projects and programs for the families at the House. Shifts would be 2 hours in length and take place primarily between 6-8 p.m.

Community Resources

This position supports our families in need by providing access to community resources that would impact the success of their transition out of the House and back home.

Working with Krystyna Karr, there are two elements of this position.  One is to research community services and resources that guests might need and/or request.  The second is to meet one-on-one with guests to help them navigate through community resources.

Shifts would be 2 hours in length and would take place in the afternoon at both our Limestone and Riley Hospital locations.

To learn more about either of these opportunities, please contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or Krystyna Karr at [email protected] or call (317) 269-2247.

Mission Moment

"Thank you for sponsoring an apartment at the Ronald McDonald House.  Having a safe place for our son, Samuel, to stay near Riley Hospital is such a blessing! He has been fighting a rare and aggressive form of leukemia and underwent a stem cell transplant. He is still receiving care at the hospital and our home is nearly 3 hours away. It is a comfort knowing he has a clean, safe place to stay."

Operations Update - Limestone
  • Please remember not to open the bags of linens placed in the closet.  They have been prepared for distribution at check-in.
  • It is important to sign out and sign in returned vacuums. One vacuum was  missing for two weeks.
  • Lately some of our Limestone Street guests have been told by staff/volunteers that they do not need to register at the RMH at Riley to use the day services since they are already registered at Limestone.  Please note that all guests, including Limestone Street guests, DO need to register at RMH at Riley as well.
  • The number of completed exit surveys is on the rise thanks to your help!  Please keep up the good work!  (We would like to see an even better response rate.)
  • We now have a phone charger with five different types of connectors, so guests without their personal charger can charge their phones.  This charger can only be loaned out by the manager on duty so they can track its return. Please refer anyone inquiring about the charger to the manager on duty.

From Rhonda at RMH at Riley

Every Monday evening the Panera near Greenwood Mall graciously donates bakery items to the RMH at Riley.  We have a couple of volunteers who arrive at Panera before 10 p.m. on Mondays to pick up this wonderful bakery donation and delivers it to the RMH at Riley on Tuesday morning.  Occasionally we need a substitute.  If you would like to learn more, please contact Rhonda Hainer at [email protected] or at 317-944-2269.

Saying Goodbye

We recently said goodbye to a longtime friend, Dale Roberts, who passed away on July 6.  Dale started volunteering at the RMH at Riley in November of 2009 as a Guest Services Volunteer on Tuesday afternoons.

Dale's wife of 52 years, Diana Roberts, is also a Guest Services Volunteer at the RMH at Riley.  He will be missed.
