I
Summer is in full swing -- we've enjoyed lots of sunny, albeit hot, tropical weather and if the forecast is correct, we're headed for another month of steamy temps.  As always, remember to keep hydrated during all activities and stay well-protected from the sun.

The 2016 Summer Olympics are just about underway. Did you know that chiropractic care is one of the core services for the Olympic athletes in Rio?  Chiropractic helps keep the spine in alignment to enable the athletes perform at their best, especially for those who compete in full contact events like jiu-jitsu or wrestling.  Even if you're not an Olympic star, regular chiropractic care can help you keep your spine balanced and flexible in order to perform the activities of daily living.  Don't be a stranger -- get checked regularly to keep your body in tip-top shape!

Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!

ADHD "Under the
Rug"
Can Have Long-Term Consequences

ADHD symptoms in children are typically very apparent --hyperactivity, impulsivity, lack of focus and attention are
all hallmark signs.  But for adults who have ADHD, the signs are much more subtle.  In fact, adults may struggle with symptoms and not realize they have the disorder.

Unlike some allergies, most children do not outgrow ADHD.  In fact, studies show that 60 percent of children with ADHD become adults with ADHD.  Many adults feel that they've had symptoms all their lives; unfortunately, most were disciplined instead of being treated for a very real neurological challenge caused by dysregulation in the brain.   Signs of adult ADHD include lack of focus, disorganization, chronic tardiness, procrastination, impulsivity/ recklessness, forgetfulness, emotional instability and distractibility.  For adults who've gone undiagnosed or untreated, anxiety and depression are also common comorbid conditions.  Untreated ADHD can wreak havoc in adulthood, causing work problems, marital stress and financial problems.

Proper diagnosis and treatment of ADHD is essential for adults to regain control of their lives. Neurofeedback therapy can help retrain the dysregulated brain-wave patterns that trigger symptoms and create new healthy connections to help the brain function properly.   Check out Dr. Chiappino's video to learn more and then take advantage of our August special: $75 off a QEEG brain map.  A "Q" helps identify the type of dysregulation in the brain and provides a roadmap for treatment.  Call us at 631.265.1223 to learn more.

Dealing With Depression Naturally

attractive-young-couple2.jpg
Depression can be invisible -- it often goes unseen by others because those in the throes of depression often feel isolated and withdraw from life.   Making the first move is hard; getting treatment requires a certain level of motivation and a hope that things will get better.  Depressed people often lack motivation and feel hopeless. Fortunately there are trained professionals armed with skills that can help develop coping mechanisms to deal with feelings and symptoms and change behavior patterns that may contribute to depression.

Many people experience ups and downs. If feelings of depression persist for over a week and half, and you and/or others notice significant changes in how you think, feel, or act, it's time to reach out to a professional, especially if thoughts of suicide are expressed."

Clinical psychologist Dr. Andreas Michaelides offers s ome advice for those suffering from depression:
  1. Find a way to be active.  It may sound counter-intuitive to be active when you do not have the motivation to start something, but engaging in an activity that previously gave satisfaction works to kick-start the brain.  The hardest part is starting!
  2. Reach out to your supports early.  Having someone to discuss things with can be the difference between sinking and swimming.
  3. Talk therapy is a very effective tool for depression.  Neurofeedback brain-wave training is another effective non-drug option that can help retrain abnormal brain-wave patterns that underlie depression.
  4. Talk about suicidal thoughts.  Oftentimes people suffering from depression have thoughts of suicide.  Talk to someone!  There are well-established phone and texting hotlines that help (the national suicide hotline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  Younger adults may prefer the texting hotline (text 741-741)
Dr. Michaelides adds a tip: "Be careful with social media -- it can make depression worse.  People on social media likely put their best pictures up, giving the illusion that everyone else is happy. Remember that everyone, not just you, experiences highs and lows in life, despite what he or she might choose to display on social media."

If you or a loved one is persistently down and can't seem to rise above the sadness, contact Dr. Michaelides at our Smithtown office for an appointment: 631.265.1223.

Reduces Hypertension

Researchers have suspected for some time that acupuncture is an effective natural tool for reducing blood pressure, and a study from the Susan-Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California -- Irvine has demonstrated that acupuncture can provide significant and long-lasting results for people with hypertension, defined as 140-180 mm Hg over 90-99 mm Hg.

Study participants with mild to moderate high blood pressure were treated at a specific set of acupuncture pressure points.  Results showed a significant and persistent lowering of blood pressure within a month of the initial acupuncture treatment.   Researchers believe 70 percent of people with hypertension will respond well to acupuncture.

According to the American Medical Association, Americans have a 90 percent chance of developing hypertension. Maintaining  optimal blood pressure through diet and exercise helps reduce the potential for stroke and heart disease.  If you're tired of the daily regime of high blood pressure pills and the frequent dizziness, fatigue and depression that often accompany the medications, acupuncture may be the alternative for you.   Contact Lori Fortunato, LAc at our office to learn how acupuncture can help manage your blood pressure and even help you reduce the need for medication.  She's offering $25 off an initial treatment for private pay patients this month.  Call 631.265.1223 to schedule your appointment.
