Governor Gina M. Raimondo, joined by Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Rep. Deborah Ruggiero and state Energy Commissioner Carol Grant, hosted a ceremonial bill signing of legislation that will enhance the state's renewable energy policies, create green jobs, and help move the state's energy sector toward a clean, sustainable, reliable future.

"This legislation reflects forward-thinking energy policies that will help us meet our state energy goals," Raimondo said. "With its passage, we can continue to create jobs, connect Rhode Islanders with more cost-effective energy options, and reduce our carbon footprint."

The bill signing follows the passage of bills sponsored by Rep. Ruggiero, Rep. Aaron Regunberg, Rep. Lauren Carson, Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture Chairwoman Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski, Sen. Erin Lynch Prata, and Sen. William Conley:
- (H8354A, S2450B) - extends the Renewable Energy Fund, enhances the Renewable Energy Growth (REG) program, expands virtual net metering and offers third-party financing for homeowners and businesses
- (H7413A, S2185A) - extends the Renewable Energy Standard
- (H7890, S2328) - incorporates clean energy into the areas of focus of the Governor's Workforce Board
- (H8180, S2174) - prepares for the development of a statewide solar permit process

Program Spotlights:

As part of Governor Raimondo's Clean Energy Lead by Example Initiative, the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources has launched the "Charge Up!" Rhode Island Vehicle Electrification Incentive Program.

The program provides incentives for state and municipal agencies to purchase and install Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE or charging stations) and electric vehicles. Qualified public sector applicants may be eligible to receive a total award of up to $75,000 to support their adoption of clean transportation solutions.

For more information on the Charge Up program, please contact  Ryan Cote of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources at (401) 574-9118.

As part of efforts to transition Rhode Island to a cleaner, low-carbon energy economy, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), in partnership with the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER), recently completed a pilot project to upgrade lighting fixtures at six DEM facilities.

As part of the program, over 1,000 LED fixtures, bulbs, or retrofit kits have been installed at Burlingame State Park, Fort Adams State Park, Fort Wetherill Marine Fisheries, Lafayette Fish Hatchery, Pier 9 in Newport, and the Port of Galilee. The new lighting is projected to save an estimated 356,370 kilowatt-hours of energy annually as well as nearly $50,000 in energy-related costs.

Last Wednesday, Warwick residents and businesses could begin signing-up for "Solarize Warwick", a community-based campaign that is part of "Solarize Rhode Island" and encourages the adoption of solar power.

Through a partnership among the Office of Energy Resources, Commerce RI and SmartPower, Solarize Rhode Island is responsible for over 350 residents and businesses gaining access to solar power since the program launched in 2014.

Solarize RI relies on several key components to reduce installation costs: 1) a competitively selected installer, 2) a tiered pricing system which reduces costs for all as more people sign contracts, and 3) organized community outreach, which includes education and access to uniform solar pricing.

For more information on the program or to participate, please contact  Shauna Beland  of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources at (401) 574-9111, or visit the program website.
