Fall Service Spotlight:
Retention Specialist

PHFS is thrilled to announce that we are one of six organizations to receive a grant from Care Oregon to help families get and keep permanent housing. We are receiving $50,000 over two years from Care Oregon and $44,000 over three years from  The Mittler Family Foundation to hire a new position - a Housing Retention Specialist.

PHFS helps about 150-200 families a year move back into a home; our new Retention Specialist will help make sure those families will be able to keep their housing long-term. The Retention Specialist will use an evidence-based practice called Critical Time Intervention to work with families for 9-12 months after they move into housing. They will visit families in their new homes and in the family's new neighborhood and will focus on helping families acquire better education and more income, connect to their new communities, develop support systems they can turn to in times of need, and learn life skills so families have the tools they need to keep their housing.
Vote YES for Affordable Homes!
Did you know Portland is 24,000 housing units short?! Join us and vote YES on the November ballot measure to allocate $258.4 million to build affordable housing! Want to get more involved? Join the movement here and follow along on Facebook
Donation Bin:
Temporary Location Change!
Due to the shelter closure, the PHFS donation bin will be temporarily relocated from August 1-19. Please see map for new location. Contact Emma Hoyle, Development Manager, with any questions or concerns.
Volunteer Spotlight:
Lisa
How long have you been volunteering with PHFS?
I've been volunteering for 3 years and I initially got involved to meet a college credit requirement and to gain experience in human service work.

In what position/shift do you typically volunteer and has that changed or evolved over the years (and why)?
Most of the time I serve as an Overnight Host at Goose Hollow but I've also done some Kid Time hosting at Thirteen Salmon.

What's your favorite thing about volunteering with PHFS?
Meeting and getting to know the families, volunteers and staff.

Tell us about a "mountain top" experience you had while volunteering at PHFS. Was there a particular time that was very moving or meaningful for you?
There was a guest who was in about the third grade who was interested in playing piano and she had a small keyboard with her so I showed her the only piece of a song that I remember how to play.  She wanted to learn it so we went over it a few times and wrote down the notes. By the next morning she pretty much had it down. I enjoy being part of an organization that supports pursuing goals and celebrating successes, and focusing on strengths.

Can you share any advice (pro tips/best practices) for new volunteers?
Read the "10 Things a Volunteer Should Know" from the new volunteer handbook, particularly numbers one and four, have fun, cultivate curiosity and ask questions.

When you're not saving the world at PHFS, what do you do for fun or to unwind?
I like to read, bicycle, work out, work in the yard or spend time with family and friends. I also like learning new things.
Congratulations! You made it to the bottom.
