WWK Update

April
NYSE
1st Quarter Review

Market Overview

The equity markets started the year in negative territory, only to recover most of these losses in February.  By the time the quarter was over, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended about where it started, ending with a return of -0.15%.  The S&P 500 fared better returning a positive 1.81% for the quarter.  International equities (represented by the MSCI EAFE) were up slightly at 0.66%.

The bond markets started the year off strong, a contrast to their relative performance in 2013.  The Barcap Global Aggregate Index was up 2.40% and the Barcap Municipal Bond index was up sharply at 3.32%. For more information on the municipal bond market, click here.

Emerging Markets

Much of the first quarter of 2014 was marked by increased volatility in the emerging markets sector. In spite of the MSCI Emerging Markets flat performance at the end of the 1st quarter, experts anticipate the geopolitical risk with the crisis in Ukraine to possibly escalate. If the situation does escalate, market analysts and industry experts anticipate further impact on emerging markets. For more information on the status of emerging markets and the political climate in Ukraine and Russia, please click here to visit the Economic Outlook section of our website.

New Rollover Rule

A new rollover rule is expected to be effective as early as January 1, 2015 and will impact direct rollovers into IRAs and Roth IRAs. Currently, the IRS does not limit the number of rollovers of retirement accounts which are distributed directly to the owner with the intention of a subsequent rollover into a qualified account. In these cases, if the assets are distributed directly to the owner, the owner has 60 days to make a rollover into an IRA or other tax qualified account without tax consequences. The new rule will only allow one such occurrence per 12 month period. Please note, there are no changes to rollovers which are transferred from one trustee or custodian to another. A link to the IRS notice which further explains the changes may be found by clicking here
