WWK Update

July
NYSE
Halftime Report - DOW 17,000

Both equity and fixed-income markets continue to provide positive results through the end of the second quarter of 2014.  The second quarter results for the equity markets were led by a resurgence in the emerging markets (+6.7%).  The U.S. and international markets also posted strong quarterly results up 5.2% and 4.3% respectively.*

The fixed markets also continued to strengthen on the positive results from the first quarter.  The Barcap Aggregate Bond Index was up 2.04% for the second quarter (3.93% YTD), while the Barcap Global Aggregate Bond Index provided similar returns - up 2.47% for the second quarter (4.93% YTD).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed 17,000 for the first time days after the quarter end.  While we certainly welcome these strong results, we must remember that market pull backs or corrections are a normal part of an investment cycle. This is why it is critical to review your allocation from time-to-time to insure it is appropriately invested.

*Emerging markets represented by the MSCI Emerging Market Index. U.S. equity markets represented by the S&P 500.  International equity markets represented by the MSCI EAFE.

Social Security: First Year Rule

If you retire midyear and have already earned more than the annual earnings limit, there is a special rule that may apply to you. Upon retiring, an individual may have the option to use the monthly earnings limit and receive social security benefits for the months in which their income does not exceed the monthly (instead of the annual) limit.  For more information on this tricky but invaluable rule, see the following link for access to the article entitled, "The Tricky First Year Rule for Working While Collecting Social Security."

America's Perception of Advisors

In a recent issue of Investment News, the leading provider of news, data, research and events on investing strategies in the financial world, an article was released which indicated that the American Public had a higher and more positive view of the worth of advisors as retirement was looming. The most important traits of good advisors were transparency and trust. For more insight on growing trends in America, see the attached article entitled, "Investors value advisors, especially when retirement is looming."
