Letter to Residents Concerning Zika
Saturday, July 30, 2016

Dear Residents,

In light of the recent reports of local Zika cases there have been increased questions and concerns from our residents.  The City of Miami Beach is taking the appropriate precautions to address this issue and we wanted to update you on our efforts.

Since January, the City of Miami Beach has focused on the identification and removal of standing water throughout the City.  Any standing water found to be in place for more than 24 hours is removed to the extent possible.

The Code Compliance and Public Works departments are coordinating closely to sweep the entire City this weekend to make sure there are no areas that we have missed.  In the event there is standing water in the public right-of-way, Public Works takes measures to remove or disburse the water.  We have also made strides over the last several months to reduce the amounts of standing water in our stormwater systems.

Effective immediately, in the event that we are unable to remove or disburse standing water, we will be utilizing environmentally-friendly products to prevent the breeding of mosquitos in those areas.

If you identify water that has been standing for more than 24 hours, please report it to either Public Works or Code Compliance through our eGov app or via telephone at 305.673.7625.  You can also notify Miami-Dade County with any concerns via their 311 app.

The City of Miami Beach continues to work closely with Miami-Dade County and the Florida Department of Health to minimize mosquitoes in Miami Beach.  Beginning tomorrow, City of Miami Beach staff will be participating in city-wide neighborhood and business inspections specifically targeting conditions that serve as mosquito breeding sources.
