Providence Care Hospital
Will Be Smoke-Free
The importance of the Bill-45 legislation and how we are preparing our staff, patients and clients for a smoke-free hospital.
At the beginning of this year, the goverment introduced Bill-45, Making Healthier Choices Act, that restricts who and where individuals can smoke on hospital property. By 2018, all hospital properties will be required to be 100% smoke-free and Designated Smoking Areas will no longer be permitted. Providence Care is taking the necessary steps to make out hospital sites smoke-free in advance of our move to the new hospital.
Teresa Broers, a Clinical Subject Matter Expert with Clinical Operational Readinessexplains how a partnership with the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) will be used as a framework for helping patients and  clients with their smoking cessation or harm reduction goals.

"The Ottawa Model is a structured, evidence-based program, that gives frontline staff the tools they need to systematically provide smoking cessation support to our patients and clients who smoke. The OMSC has five main components: identifying smokers, documenting it, providing strategic advice, starting pharmacotherapy, and providing follow up," says Teresa. Adding, "
Using this structured model -- which is used in over 350 sites across Canada -- will improve the success of smoking cessation, as there is a 20% success rate for patientsa and clients receiving smoking cessation medications and/or counselling compared to only 3-5% success rate for patients and clients who have unassisted quit attempts."

Teresa confirms Providence Care started the OMSC model on two inpatient units at our Mental Health Site. Nine of the first ten clients who were assessed agreed to start some form of pharmacotherapy. OMSC training will be offered in September with a goal of having all inpatient units and programs offering systematic smoking cessation assessments by late September.

"Patients and clients are not required to quit smoking, if that is not their goal. Rather, staff can help patients and clients reduce their smoking consumption or manage their withdrawal symptoms while they are in hospital." she explains.
