Meet our New Council Members
Cecilia M. Giachelli, Ph.D., Professor
President-Elect
Hunter and Dorothy Simpson
     Endowed Chair of Bioengineering
University of Washington

Dr. Giachelli received her undergraduate training in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis and the doctoral degree in Pharmacology from the University of Washington.  In 1999, she joined the UW Bioengineering department as Assistant Professor and Deputy Director of the NSF-sponsored Engineering Research Center, UW Engineered Biomaterials.  She is currently the Hunter and Simpson Endowed Chair of Bioengineering.

Dr. Giachelli is internationally recognized for her work investigating the molecular mechanisms of vascular calcification and extracellular matrix control of cell function. Her studies have led to the discovery of key inducers and inhibitors that contribute to vascular calcification in the setting of chronic kidney disease, valve disease, atherosclerosis and medical devices.  These discoveries are currently being translated to therapeutic strategies to block inappropriate calcification in disease and biomaterials development. Other key areas of research include control of inflammation and foreign body reaction, regenerative medicine, cell and tissue engineering.

Dr. Giachelli is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Washington State Academy of Sciences, and recipient of the American Heart Association Established Investigator Award, the Advances in Mineral Metabolism Investigator Award, and the American Society of Nephrology's Jack W. Coburn Lectureship.

MicroRNA-181b inhibits thrombin-mediated endothelial activation and arterial thrombosis by targeting caspase recruitment domain family member 10
FASEB Journal
Thrombogenic and inflammatory mediators, such as thrombin, induce NF-?B-mediated endothelial cell (EC) activation and dysfunction, which contribute to pathogenesis of arterial thrombosis. The role of anti-inflammatory microRNA-181b (miR-181b) on thrombosis remains unknown.  Read more

Scavenger receptor class A member 5 (SCARA5) and suprabasin (SBSN) are hub genes of coexpression network modules associated with peripheral vein graft patency
Journal of Vascular Surgery
OBJECTIVE: Approximately 30% of autogenous vein grafts develop luminal narrowing and fail because of intimal hyperplasia or negative remodeling. The authors previously found that vein graft cells from patients who later develop stenosis proliferate more in vitro in response to growth factors than cells from patients who maintain patent grafts.  Read more

Pericardial patch venoplasty heals via attraction of venous progenitor cells
Physiological Reports
Pericardial patches are commonly used during cardiovascular surgery to close blood vessels. In arteries, patches accumulate arterial progenitor cells; the authors hypothesized that venous patches would accumulate venous progenitor cells, in the absence of arterial pressure.  Read more

Membrane-mediated regulation of vascular identity
Birth Defects Research. Part C, Embryo Today: Reviews
Vascular diseases span diverse pathology, but frequently arise from aberrant signaling attributed to specific membrane-associated molecules, particularly the Eph-ephrin family. Originally recognized as markers of embryonic vessel identity, Eph receptors and their membrane-associated ligands, ephrins, are now known to have a range of vital functions in vascular physiology.  Read more

Embryological Origin of Human Smooth Muscle Cells Influences Their Ability to Support Endothelial Network Formation

Repercussions of Brexit for life sciences research
The Guardian
The Guardian reports heightened levels of   concern in the UK that withdrawal from the European Union will have a chilling effect on basic life sciences research and translational medicine. Public scientific research in Britain employs some 100,000 researchers and produces publications second in citation only to the US. As a leading enterprise, research is one of the many areas likely to suffer if Britain leaves the EU. Three-quarters of the increase in scientific funding to universities has come from the EU over the last few years.

Crispr/Cas9 technology adapts porcine vasculature for human compatibility
Nature
Investigators in academia and in private ventures have taken advantage of the specificity and efficiency of Crispr/Cas9-directed gene modification in efforts to produce a steady and safe source of tissues, including hearts blood vessels for human transplantation. In 2014, United Therapeutics formed a partnership with the biotech firm Synthetic Genomics (SGI). SGI is engineering tissues displaying receptors that sequester human immune signaling factors that would otherwise attack the organ.
