ASK Wins Another National Award and is Featured in the Media!
The program's 18 Adoptive Parent Liaisons (APLs) work tirelessly across the state to help nearly 4,000 adoptive parents with support, training and legislative and public policy advocacy. Some of those liaisons were featured in an article in the Lexington Herald-Leader on January 3, 2011. There was also an article profiling the ASK program and award in University of Kentucky news and on WUKY's Perspectives radio show with University President Dr. Todd that will air on February 4, 2011. Congratulations to ASK for more well deserved recognition!

S.A.F.E. Success Story!
In a recent IEP development meeting, an Special Advocate for Education (S.A.F.E.) was able to assist in the stabilization of a child's placement in a mainstream classroom. The advocate's neutral position allowed her to facilitate productive collaboration between the resource parent and teacher that resulted in consensus regarding how to best meet that child's needs in the classroom!
Special Advocates for Education receive specific training and/or have personal experience with working with teachers, coaches, counselors and administrators to obtain needed services for children. Advocates can answer procedural questions concerning individual education plans (IEPs) for children in care and know what steps to take to obtain a 504 plan or have an IEP or 504 reviewed.
For more information contact George Humlong, Special Advocates for Education Program Director.
