Creating Successful Caregiver Teams

It's time to set up your caregiver game plan. One important element is assembling the caregiver team.

At a recent Town Hall Forum, Dr. Dan Sewell, a board-certified Geropsychiatrist and member of ActivCare's Medical Advisory Board, presented some helpful tips for creating and managing a network to provide care. Here's an excerpt from his presentation.

Assemble the Right Team
  • Make a list of family members (and friends and neighbors) who are willing and able to help and what special skills and talents they possess
  • Give family members/friends specific tasks or assignments (capitalize on their strengths and talents)
  • Keep in mind that caring for a family member with Alzheimer's can be extremely stressful
  • Anticipate that long-standing patterns of behavior and communication between family members may be intensified by the stress of the situation
Effective Communication is Key
  • Periodically solicit feedback and offer praise and thanks
  • Strive for open honest communication
  • Encourage all involved family members and friends to become as educated as possible
  • Encourage caregivers to attend a course on how best to communicate with someone who has Alzheimer's
  • Encourage caregivers to attend support groups
Manage the Team
  • Share the burden of caregiving with as many people as possible.
  • Assign out-of-town individuals tasks that do not require them to be geographically close to the patient (e.g., email updates, phone tree preparation)
  • Set limits if a caregiver is saying or doing things that hurt more than help.
  • Monitor each caregiver for signs of physical or psychiatric illness or burnout
  • Insist that each person has vacations from their caregiving duties
  • Establish clear lines of authority and communication

Practical Information For Family Caregivers
You Are a Family Caregiver...Now What?

Whether you assume the lead role or you have been asked to join a caregiver team, you want to prepare yourself for the job ahead. One way is to make a plan and include your family members in the conversation. Understanding and preparing for what may lie ahead can ease stress on everyone.

We found this helpful article on the eldercare.gov website that provides an overview of caring for a senior and some helpful questions to ask before setting up your plan.
Tools for the Caregiver

Getting everyone on the same page is challenging for any team leader. Getting everyone on the same schedule is even more difficult. We have discovered a few resources for caregivers to aid in getting everyone on board.

Creating a Care Team Calendar

The Alzheimer's Association provides a free calendar for caregivers to create and share with their caregiver teams. More than just a schedule, this communication tool can post updates, announcements and availability. Click on the link below to learn more and sign up.

Overcoming Conflicts

Conflict with loved ones can be emotionally draining and frustrating. When setting up a team, it is important to understand how to overcome differences and ensure that everyone works together.

We wanted to share these four tips for settling conflicts more effectively.

  1. Express compassion. What does this person need? Is it basic survival or simply understanding? Connect with your empathy. Look for positive ways you can improve how they feel.
  2. Examine your own narrative. Is your tone calm and respectful?
  3. Listen objectively. Everyone needs to feel understood, nurtured, and supported.
  4. Seek an outside perspective or advice from family, friends or support group.
Did You Know...

Summer-time often means vacation time. Whether it's an out-of-town getaway or a vacation of the mind, take time to take a break. Vacation and travel can lead to these benefits:

A vacation increases energy levels.

Travel can help improve your problem-solving skills and can make you more creative. When you take the time to relax and not think about anything at all, you'll often find that you stumble upon new ideas and great insight.

Taking a vacation can lower your risk of heart disease.

Benefits of travel are almost immediate. After only a day or two, 89% of people experience significant drops in stress.

And travel has been shown to promote overall brain health.

The positive effects of taking time off aren't just good for you; they could be good for those around you too. Renewed energy and a positive attitude are contagious.

Don't have time to get away? Join us for our upcoming Luau and take a little "vacation" for the afternoon.
