New Overtime Rules
NNA endorses "common-sense" bill to address new rule of U.S. Depth. of Labor
|
The National Newspaper Association today applauded a proposal by four House Democrats to phase in an increase in the threshold salary requirements for overtime-exempt employees.
A bill by Reps. Kurt Schrader, Oregon; Jim Cooper, Tennessee; Henry Cuellar, Texas; and Collin Peterson, Minnesota, would help small businesses to comply with a new rule by the U.S. Department of Labor that would will increase the salary threshold by about 100 percent in one leap on Dec. 1, 2016. The Overtime Reform and Enhancement Act would instead impose a 50 percent increase in December and then phase out the remainder over 4 years.

Hugh N. Boyd Journalism Diversity Workshop preparing for July 24 re-launch at
Rutgers-New Brunswick
|
As highlighted in the last MemberUpdate issue, this workshop was originally founded in 1979 and previously offered every summer until 2009. The new program launches on the Rutgers (RU) campus the week of July 24-30. Ten high school students of diverse demographic and geographic backgrounds from all corners of the state were competitively selected. They will be housed the entire week on the RU campus while utilizing the resources of the Rutgers Journalism and Media Studies Dept.
According to Workshop Director Karyn K. Collins, the students will spend a day "in the field" on Wednesday, July 27. The day will start in Red Bank to learn about the T. Thomas Fortune house restoration project. T. Thomas Fortune was a former slave who rose to become a civil rights leader and editor of the New York Age. In the afternoon, they'll be at the offices of the Asbury Park Press in Neptune to spend time in the newsroom with staff editors and writers and attend a news planning meeting.
NOTE: All NJPA members are welcomed and encouraged to attend the Boyd Workshop's closing celebration, Saturday, July 30, at 9 a.m. It includes each student showcasing their work produced during the workshop and a brief panel discussion for students and their parents about preparing for college and careers in journalism. The location is Room 212 of the School of Communication and Information, 4 Huntington St., New Brunswick. Please rsvp to Karyn Collins at:

NAA gives special shoutout to state press associations
David Chavern, NAA president & CEO
|
Associations have a unique power to convene and create communities. As president and CEO of the Newspaper Association of America, I believe in the ability of associations to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas that will propel us forward. In this time of revolution and change, state press associations have a critical role to play in this exchange, and after visiting with four of them recently, I am even more convinced of the importance of state press associations to achieving industry-wide goals.

Facebook recently introduced their "See First" feature, which gives users the ability to select the friends and pages they care about and have them appear at the top of their News Feed. If not selected, Facebook automatically prioritizes posts by friends and family ahead of business and brand pages, meaning you may not be exposed to NJPA anymore on your Feed.
Fortunately, you can use the "See First" option to have NJPA member updates and content appear at the top of your News Feed.
Facebook offers simple instructions on how to do so
here.
