NAMI-NYS at
Convention Kicks-Off With Celebration of
HR2646 Passage
The Convention began on a high-note when on Wednesday, July 6th, the U.S House of Representatives passed HR 2646,
The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. NAMI-NYS has been advocating for this landmark piece of legislation for more than 3 years and we presented the bill's sponsor Rep Tim Murphy (R-PA) with our 2014 Legislative Champion Award.
We are thrilled to report that every member of the New York State House delegation voted yes on the bill. Please make sure to thank your House Representative for their vote on this important legislation. Our focus will now shift to getting the Senate to pass S.1945; both New York Senators
Senators Charles Schumer and Kirstin Gilibrand are co-sponsors of the Senate bill.
NAMI Rochester Receives
2016 Outstanding NAMI Affiliate Award
As we previously reported, we are all extremely proud of our NAMI Rochester affiliate being recognized as the 2016 Outstanding NAMI Affiliate. Barbara Ricci Elected
to NAMI Board of Directors
Barbara Ricci, a member of NAMI-NYC Metro and NAMI-NYS was elected to the NAMI Board of Directors. We congratulate Barbara and look forward to having her voice on the NAMI Board.
NAMI-NYS's Advocacy Voice Recognized
Throughout Convention
Throughout the convention NAMI recognized how NAMI-NYS and our members are successfully projecting our advocacy voice. Public Engagement Coordinator Matthew Shapiro presented about New York's Paid Family Leave initiative during the "Care for Caregivers" portion of the NAMI Advocacy Networking session. Board member Rob Laitman also participated in the session.

During the "Cutting Through The Election Noise To #Act4MentalHealth " session discussing advocacy strategies, one of the slides featured NAMI-NYS's activities to engage NYS Legislators at this year's Legislative Disability Awareness Day.

Finally, during the "Act, Advocate, Achieve" session NAMI Executive Director Mary Giliberti mentioned the tremendous advocacy of NAMI-NYS member Hakeem Rahim who testified before both the House of Representatives and the Senate to tell his story of recovery and how we need to reform the mental health system.

New York State Attorney General
Eric Schneiderman
Receives Distinguished Service Award
NAMI honored New York State Attorney General Eric Sxhneiderman with the Distinguished Service Award for his work to hold insurance companies accountable in maintaining parity in covering mental illness. Unfortunately, Attorney General Schneiderman was unable to attend but he sent a video message where he told of his time in the NYS Senate and the story of Timothy O'Clair, an adolescent who took his life after his family's insurance failed to cover his mental illness. His story led to the passage of NYS's Timothy's Law mandating parity and Attorney General Schneiderman has continued to fight for full parity for all New Yorkers. NAMI will be providing us with his video message and we look forward to featuring that in a future E-News edition.
NAMI-NYS Members Meet With National Mental Health Reformers Patrick Kennedy and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper
The Convention's opening session featured two of the nation's leading mental health reformers, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and former Congressman Patrick Kennedy. NAMI-NYS board members Sigfrido Benitez, Dhanu Sannesy, Chemene Webber along with Public Engagement Coordinator Matthew Shapiro had the opportunity to meet with both Governor Hickenlooper and Congressman Kennedy.

Psychiatric Research Conducted in
New York State Showcased at Convention
The work of New York's two publicly funded research institutions was featured at the Convention. Dr. Mary Jane Alexander, of the Nathan Kline Institute (and the recipient of the 2015 NAMI-NYS Excellence in Research Award) presented on her work with the New York City Parachute Project. Joining Dr. Alexander during the presentation were Dr. Pablo Sadler, Medical Director, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as well as several Parachute team members from Visiting Nurse Service of New York; David Lindy, M.D., Chief Psychiatrist and Clinical Director, Community Mental Health Services, Antonio Munoz, Peer Specialist, Parachute Mobile Team and Neil Pessin, Ph.D., Vice President, Community Mental Health Services.

Oscar Jimenez-Solomon, M.P.H., Research Scientist and Research Coordinator, New York State Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence at New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University Medical Center was featured as part of the session on engagement. During the session NAMI unveiled their new booklet
Engagement: A New Standard for Mental Health Care which features Dr. Jimenez-Solomon's work. NAMI-NYS has copies of the resource and will be sending it to affiliates.
