Summer Bible Study Retreat

All women of Joy are invited to join our ecumenical sisters from the other churches in Prescott for the annual Summer Bible Study Retreat. This year it will be held on
Saturday, August 13th from 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., in the Joy Lutheran Church Fireside Room. Bible Study will be followed by a potluck salad luncheon. This year's Bible Study, written by Angela Shannon, a Pastor at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, TX, is called
"The Heart of the Matter-Conflict, Forgiveness and Reconciliation." We hear these words spoken from our pulpits, in our hymns and various places throughout our churches. Yet we see conflict in our society and the ways in which we harm each other. We are already in an election year where the politics are shrill and mean aw ever. Even in our churches we find conflict. What's miraculous is that God continues to create us anew. God insists on entrusting us with the ministry of reconciliation, helping us to learn the practical application of forgiveness and reconciliation. Emilie Horken from Joy Lutheran Church, Anita Miller from the UCC Church, Prescott and Cheryl Demuth from St. John's UCC will be the leaders of the study on August 13th. Do join us to learn how to deal with conflict through the ministry of reconciliation. Bring a friend and a salad to share! Hope to see you there!

Plant Market 2016

July is here with 80 and 90 degree temps, much different than the morning temps for our 8th annual plant market event! Saturday morning the workers and shoppers were faced with 34 degree temps and windy conditions.
We are pleased to announce that these conditions did not stop Joy from having another successful event! The plant sale raised $4,250 dollars to be distributed between ELCA World Hunger, Prescott Food Pantry, St.Croix Habitat for Humanity and Joy Enhancements.
The plant market committee would like to thank everyone at Joy who supported the event: the members who purchased the plants for their yards and gardens, the members who donated money toward purchasing our annual flower order, the members who donated perennials from their yards, the members that distributed the advertising signs and the members who volunteered their time the days of the event or in set up and clean up.
We especially want to thank the following people and organizations:
Thrivent Action Team for supplying startup funds for the annual plant purchase,
Dave and Kelly Johnson with ACE Hardware River Falls for their assistance in purchasing our annual plants and hanging basket donations, Hope Olson for supplying lunch on Saturday,
Jim Flatz for preparing the financial and data breakdown spreadsheet on the event.
Core staff in planning the event, Craig and Tammy Orf, Diane Meyer, Karen Lundgaard, Ernie Schultz, Doug Keyport, Hope Olson, Bobbie Flatz and Joan Northouse .

JWELCA Women Plan for 2016-17

The following women met on July 12th to discuss JWELCA plans for the 2016-17 year: Marcia Lindseth, Emilie Horken, Diane Meyer, Linda Wilson, Phyllis Hoffmann, and Cathy Martin. A new 2016-17 JWELCA Directory will be published in August and will be distributed to all the women of Joy Lutheran Church. The Directory will list the various programs and mission projects that were decided upon at the planning meeting. All women should be looking for their Directory to arrive in the mail next month. Other business discussed included the following:
  • It was decided to send $100 to Our Neighbors' Place Day Center which connects people with resources and provides Transitional Housing to families who are or will be homeless. Their mission is to "connect our neighbors with support, housing, and shelter services to foster self-determination." Our Neighbors' Place is located in River Falls and each month has contact with 20-40 families and individuals that are experiencing homelessness.
  • It was agreed to send $100 to the Women of the ELCA for their Katie's Fund, (named after Katharine Von Bora Luther). This is the WELCA's Endowment Fund that supports ministries of global connections, leadership development and living theology. Gifts to Katie's Fund help to develop women leaders, bridge cultures, and nurture faith.
  • Discussion was held regarding the Women of the ELCA's Tenth Triennial Gathering that will be held in Minneapolis next July 13-16, 2017. The theme is "All Anew." JWELCA will be encouraging as many women as possible to attend since the location is so close. Registration opens on September 1st. Some fundraising ideas were discussed so JWELCA can help women of our congregation to attend. For more information, visit www.welcatg.org.
  • It was decided to combine our two JWELCA Bible Studies into one beginning with the September Bible Study. It will meet on the 2nd Tuesdays of each month at 1:30 P.M. in the Fireside Room at the church.

Women Attend Summer Retreat

The following Joy women attended the St. Croix Valley Conference Summer Retreat on July 14th at Bethany Lutheran Church in Stair Prairie: Emilie Horken, Shirley Johnson, Diane Meyer, Cathy Martin, Sue Hood, and Marcia Lindseth. A total of fifty women were in attendance. Pastor Dan Pennington, Pastor at Bethany Lutheran, gave the devotions, and Mary Segerstrom gave an entertaining and inspirational program on the theme of "You Shall Be Like a Watered Garden" from Isaiah 58:11. Avalene Swanson, Synod Women's Chair of the Malawi Women's Literacy Project, reported that $4000 has been raised to support this project which is training women in Malawi how to read. Presently, our dollars are going to help train teachers and buy supplies. Twenty-five classes in 22 locations are now being offered to women who desire to learn to read. The classes are often held in the Feeding Centers in Malawi. Classes are offered 3-5 times per week for two hours each. Sue Saarem, Synod Women's Organization (SWO) President, reported on several Synod-wide topics, including the upcoming SWO Leadership Training on September 17th in Chippewa Falls, the Triennial Convention in Minneapolis next summer, and the 2018 SWO Convention that will have to be moved due to the closing of the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Eau Claire. An offering of $357.00 was collected, ½ going to the SWO, and ½ to the Bethany Quilters Guild. New Board Members of the St. Croix Valley Conference were installed, including our own Sue Hood. In all it was a good morning well spent with sisters in our St. Croix Valley Conference!
Thank You's to JWELCA..........

Dear Women of Joy Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your generous gift to Lutheran World Relief's Quilt and Kit shipping Fund! Your donation ensures that LWR Quilts and Kits get into the hands of a person who needs it. With your help, we have delivered Quilts and Kits to Jordan, to people who have fled the ongoing conflict in Syria. For refugee families, your gift means so much. A School Kit can make the difference between getting an education or missing out. A Personal Care Kit helps families provide for basic hygiene needs, freeing up precious resources. Quilts help families through cold winter nights. Thank you for your generosity and partnership!
Warm Regards,
Daniel V. Speckhard, LWR President and CEO

Dear Women of Joy Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your $100 gift to Global Health Ministries! We are grateful.
Your support helps us continue to impact lives around the world! In the villages we serve in Nigeria, over 90% of pregnant women are sleeping under treated mosquito nets, compared to 30% just three years ago. Village Health Workers, many of them trained with support from GHM, have helped make that difference. In Madagascar, more than 100 nursing students are being trained each year at the Lutheran School of Nursing, thanks to GHM support. In Tanzania medical officers, lab technicians, and radiologists are developing new skills, and using them in mission hospitals and clinics equipped with medical supplies and equipment sent, with your help, by GHM.
Every day there are examples of lives changed in countries all over the globe. You have been part of making that possible! Thank you for helping the hands that heal.
Blessings,
Kim Dickey, Director for Mission Development

June 20-28, 19 youth and adults traveled to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park for the 4th consecutive year.

Our church group left a lasting impact on the park and those we encountered as well.  Volunteers did a wide variety of projects including painting of tables, buildings, decks, replacing fire rings, hauling cut building materials for a trail restoration, planting and building enclosures for a shoreline restoration project, remote latrine moving and digging, remote down tree removal from trails.
The church group also enjoyed fishing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, campfire worships, sight seeing, and all the wildlife!
