Before arriving on campus this fall, future Ohio State students from China had the opportunity to attend Pre-Departure Orientation in Shanghai and Beijing from June 17-25. Over 720 parents and students were in attendance for the fourth annual program. The program offers an opportunity for students to meet Ohio State staff and faculty, learn about the Columbus area and prepare for the cultural changes they will face inside and outside of the classroom.
More than 30 student volunteers welcomed the new students and their families, assisted with translations and shared their own experiences with Ohio State.
"It is an incredible and unique experience," said student volunteer Yunhan Hu. "I got the chance to meet many new students and parents, and made a lot of good friends with other student volunteers."
In addition to the orientation, students and families attended an alumni reception, where they met with Ohio State graduates who live and work in China.
"I think it is great that your university hosts this Pre-Departure Orientation. Before this event I didn't know much about Ohio State, but now I have a better idea about how American higher education works. I am very pleased that I made the right decision of sending my son to Ohio State," one parent in attendance said.
Ohio State is one of the first universities in the United States to organize a pre-departure orientation in China. The China Gateway office facilitates in-country communication and support is provided by the Office of International Affairs and Office of Student Life.
