Fourth annual Pre-Departure Orientation in China
Before arriving on campus this fall, future Ohio State students from China had the opportunity to attend Pre-Departure Orientation in Shanghai and Beijing from June 17-25. Over 720 parents and students were in attendance for the fourth annual program. The program offers an opportunity for students to meet Ohio State staff and faculty, learn about the Columbus area and prepare for the cultural changes they will face inside and outside of the classroom.

More than 30 student volunteers welcomed the new students and their families, assisted with translations and shared their own experiences with Ohio State.

"It is an incredible and unique experience," said student volunteer Yunhan Hu. "I got the chance to meet many new students and parents, and made a lot of good friends with other student volunteers."

In addition to the orientation, students and families attended an alumni reception, where they met with Ohio State graduates who live and work in China.

"I think it is great that your university hosts this Pre-Departure Orientation. Before this event I didn't know much about Ohio State, but now I have a better idea about how American higher education works. I am very pleased that I made the right decision of sending my son to Ohio State," one parent in attendance said.

Ohio State is one of the first universities in the United States to organize a pre-departure orientation in China. The China Gateway office facilitates in-country communication and support is provided by the Office of International Affairs and Office of Student Life.
Global Internship Program midterm roundtable
The China Gateway staff met with students participating in the Global Internship Program in China to discuss their midterm internship experience at a roundtable on June 27. The Global Internship Program provides professional opportunities to Ohio State students in China during a 10-12 week summer program.

During the roundtable students talked about the major responsibilities in their internships, current project progress and thoughts on their working environment. All of the students had positive feedback to provide.

"So far, I have really enjoyed my work" said Keasen Hao, a sophomore majoring in management and information systems in Ohio State's Fisher College of Business. "I think it provides me with a great chance to apply the skills and knowledge I learned at school and learn about the business world - especially retail market."

Students in the program are majoring in computer science and engineering, finance and accounting, operation management, mathematics and data analysis, industrial and system engineering and mechanical engineering. Companies like Continental AG, Kantar Retail, Fiat Chrysler and Ctrip provide the internship experiences and each student is also paired with one senior alumni mentor for career advice and guidance.
College of Engineering strengthens ties with Chinese universities
Donald Hempson, director of international initiatives for Ohio State's College of Engineering, traveled to  China for a week in June to meet with representatives from three major engineering universities in Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing.

Hempson discussed dual-degree agreements and the potential for further collaboration between Ohio State students and students at Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Beijing Jiaotong University. While in China, Hempson also hosted a dinner for Ohio State's engineering alumni advisory group in Shanghai.

The Ohio State China Gateway provided logistical support for the visit.
