The Foundation & UCREW Committees have been working hard towards our goal of achieving the CREW Chapter Challenge (this entails contributing a Chapter donation of $1,000, and attaining both 100% of Board participation and 50% of member participation in donating towards the Network Foundation). We've accomplished the first two, and are excited to report that we've made it to 40% of member donations, and only have 10% to go!  It's not too late to make your donation and assist CREW DC in making it to our goal! Funds raised for the Foundation go towards empowering the next generation of women with annual Network Scholarships, career outreach, industry research, and mentoring opportunities. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH - SOUTHWEST, DC WATERFRONT

As part of our ongoing series to highlight developments and the neighborhoods that house them, this  week the spotlight is on the Southwest, DC Waterfront!
 
Part of the Pierre L'Enfant Plan, the Southwest, DC Waterfront is strategically located at the intersection  of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Southwest is the smallest quadrant in Washington, DC, with its  size and relative isolation from the rest of the city resulting in a unique neighborhood atmosphere. Since
the 1850's, the region has served as the primary commercial waterfront for Washington, DC. The  region's distinct industrial atmosphere traces back to its roots, where wharves were constructed for  maritime activities, including the production and storage of coal, ice, and lumber. These facilities were  later appropriated for military use during the Civil War and eventually left abandoned thereafter.  Extreme poverty set in during the years that followed, resulting in the region becoming referred to as  "The Washington that tourists never see."
 
During the 1950's, City officials attempted to improve the region through redevelopment efforts - It was  one of the earliest urban renewal attempts in the United States, funded by the Redevelopment Land  Agency. Declaring eminent domain, the City seized the majority of the land South of the National Mall  and North of the Anacostia River, for the construction of commercial office buildings. However, their  attempts to transform a struggling region did more harm than good, displacing over 23,000 people and  1,500 businesses. The region's infrastructure was altered as buildings were razed to make way for  construction of the Southwest Freeway and Maine Avenue, ultimately separating the region from its  greatest resource, the waterfront.
 
This time around, developers PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette are working to redevelop the  Waterfront in a manner than pays homage to the region's heritage, while ushering in the new. Hoffman- Madison were selected in 2006, over sixteen other applicants as the master developers for the  Southwest Waterfront. Working hand-in- hand with the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation, Hoffman- Madison is working towards a common vision of a revitalized and sustainable waterfront community.
 
The developers broker ground on March 2014, in what has been called a "once-in- a-generation  opportunity," known as The Wharf. The $1.2 billion project contains 50 acres of water and 24 acres of
land to be developed into retail, office, and residential product.
 


Retail
 
The retail promises to offer an eclectic experience with the roster of offerings including:
  • Potomac Distilling Company: Mixologist, Todd Thrasher's creations will come to life in this rum distillery and two-story tavern.
  • La Vie: A concept from the Social Restaurant Group, the minds behind Provision 14 and Bonfire. Will result in a 9,800 SF restaurant, featuring French-Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant will also provide access to a 5,000-square- foot rooftop terrace.
  • Requin: A concept by Top Chef Finalist Jennifer Carroll in partnership with chef and restaurateur Mike Isabella. The duo will bring French Mediterranean to the Wharf, complete with an extensive European wine menu.
  • The Maine Avenue Fish Market: The oldest open-air market of its kind in the United States, operating since the early 1800's. The development team is working to restore the historic oyster shed, relocate the fish cleaning building, and add a distillery building and market hall. 
Residential
 
The project plans for 1,375 residences: Phase 1 of the development includes VIO and 525 Water, both  luxury condominium buildings designed by Handel Architects in collaboration with WDG Architects.
 
  • VIO located at 750 Maine Avenue is a 112-unit, 12-story condo
  • 525 Water, a 108-unit, 5-story condo, named for its location is at 525 Water Street
  • There are also two apartment buildings planned for phase 1 (3Q 2017): 
    • 775 Pearl Street, 150 Units, 120,000 SF with 75,000 SF of ground-floor retail.
    • 950 Maine Avenue, a mixed-use building which will contain: 412,000 SF of apartments (501 units), 49,000 SF of ground-floor retail, the Wharf Club Amenity Complex containing 45,000 SF, and Wharf Hall a 142,000 SF (6,000 person capacity) event space.
Office
 
Delivery of 945,000 SF of Trophy and Class A Office space is expected. The first office locations to be  built are 800 Maine and 1000 Maine, both of which will be LEED Gold.
  • 800 Maine, named The Gateway of The Wharf, will be the Waterfront's 11-story crown jewel with 220,000 SF of office space and 12,000 SF of ground-level retail, slated for delivery by Q3 2017.
  • 1000 Maine, the Warf's first trophy office building features 250,000 SF of space with 20,000 SF of ground-level retail - Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) and FOX Architects are the designing firms for this project.

Dear Members,

The long, hot days of summer are upon us and you may have noticed that the Chapter has had fewer events lately. With a couple of exceptions, our committees are taking some much deserved time off.

As I have looked back at the first half of year, I am amazed at what we have accomplished! With 2016
being an election year in the Nation's Capital, it seemed appropriate to build our events around the Politics of Business. We wanted to kick off the year with high profile speakers, so I asked BIG from the Programs Committee for the January Luncheon. They delivered a spectacular program with Donna Brazile and Mary Matalin who provided a lively discussion about politics and business.

In March, the luncheon was focused on Playing the Field in Sports, Politics and Economic Development, with an entertaining discussion around the Verizon Center and how it transformed Chinatown and the East End. April's Luncheon was Women on the Move II, a sold out event with a panel of highly accomplished women who have made it to the top. The May luncheon covered the future of Pennsylvania Avenue, an energetic discussion around the FBI Headquarters site. To wrap up the first half of the year, the Programs Committee was encouraged to think outside the box, and the luncheon was at the new WeLive Community.

There has been numerous other successful events, with many selling out within hours of the registration being posted. Clearly, that is telling us that we are getting something right.

As we look forward to the second half of the year, we will continue to offer a variety of programs. The focus will continue to be on our members and topics that are relevant to the industry, the political
process, and the Politics of Business.
