Joseph Daniels is the last figure of the theatrical magic underground. For the past 5 years in Columbia, SC Joseph and his collaborators have been quietly operating The Dark Cabaret, a venue show in the capital city. While great pains were taken to keep the event off the radar of the magical community, the show has been attended by fans and celebrities from across the United States. It has transformed from an invitation only evening, into a theatrical phenomenon that requires reservations to avoid disappointment.

The staff include a top SC mentalist, palmist, a Georgia Wonder specialist, and of course, Christian Thee, a master Trompe-l'œil painter and Broadway scenic artist. Joseph is a lecturer, designer, published author, a film and stage actor, director, and stage combat expert. After over 25 years as a full time professional magician he now works for the publishers of Ripley's Believe It or Not! and Guinness World Records. His affiliation with them was kept secret when The Dark Cabaret applied for, and won a BION (Believe it or Not Award). This award had never been presented to any performer in the art of theatre or magic!
In addition to his theories and creations (from illusions and mentalism, to comedy and sleight of hand) Joseph will provide ideas for approaching venue performances and share how collaboration and networking have the potential to make your show an ongoing success!
He will outline basic character development and share many of the advantages and pitfalls that can be embraced and avoided if you pay attention to a few key things and involve the right people. More importantly, as a 15 plus year member of Sleight Club, Joseph will outline the approach that has yielded so many award winning acts, lecturers, authors, & theatrical, television, and film consultants.

It's a lot to cover in a short period of time so this theatrical mystery crash course takes no prisoners!
          OPTIONAL JOSEPH DANIELS MASTER CLASS
Joseph Daniel's Master Class is unlike any that we've experienced. The idea is simple. We all possess more than enough effects to fill a show. Now the key is to use this knowledge and these tools to turn the tricks into magic.
          1. First, finding yourself...how to create a character that supports and defines your performance.
          2. Building a show around your character.
          3. Finding opportunities to perform the show you create.
          4. Establishing your value and creating a show that sets you apart.
          5. Finding or creating a showcase for your creation.
          6. Building a brand that sets you apart.
While this may be more than most people need or want, these secrets are how we've created award winning acts, lecturers, authors, & theatrical, television, and film consultants.
This opportunity is strictly limited to performers who are determined to take the next step to success and where to go once they've achieved it. We look forward to hosting a select few...

JULY 2016 RING REPORT
Ring 199's Friday magic luncheon meetings are facilitated by Danny Reeves.  In the month of July, the luncheon sessions were wrought with good magic!! The parade of magic seemed to be endless!

Danny Reeves defied the laws of physics when he seemingly caused two solid soda straws to pass through each other.  Reeves' professional handling of the card routine "Triumph" rivaled any well-known magician performing the same effect. Xan Innes performed potpourri of card routines which included (but were not limited to) "Twisting the Aces", "Cutting to the Tens", and Jerry Andrus' "Cascading Waterfall".

True to form, Innes then finished up by demonstrating incredible card fans.  Mike Gorman was tireless with his presentations. They kept coming and coming to the glee of all who witnessed his talent for working the crowd and plastering smiles on spectators!  In one routine, Gorman produced a coin from "nowhere".  Later the single coin became two coins, and then inexplicably became three DIFFERENT coins!

Rick DeNatale's over-the-table performances included torn and restored rubber bands and top changes with a deck of cards.  Kevin Reylek performed "Casey's Poker Test 2.0", "Color Monte", and a card penetration routine.

Newcomer Cal Horelick did a nice card-at-any-number routine and an excellent coins-across effect.  In addition to fine magic performances, the luncheon group had discussions and workshops which covered "The Lazy Man's Handcuffs", the Zarrow shuffle, "secret moves", and various false shuffles.

Ring 199's regular July 2016 meeting was fortunate indeed to have David Trustman and Sarah Moseley as its guest mini-lecturers. Trustman and Moseley are well known in the club for their outstanding mentalists' feats with amazing mind boggling results. The lecture began with an introduction of the history of mnemonics touting history greats such as Socrates, Aristotle, and Simonides.

There are various systems of mnemonics, however Trustman and Moseley have gone one step further by creating their own system and were also gracious enough to explain that system to attendees.  The explanations were enhanced by the couple's newly released book The Memory Arts Fundamentals. The club was shown how to memorize a whole deck of randomly shuffled cards.  Moseley further demonstrated the virtues of their system by putting it to a test.

Audience members were called on to name 20 objects which were written on a blackboard with Moseley's back to it.  Each object was assigned to a number.  Amazingly, Moseley was able to recall ALL of the items!  Even more amazing was that Moseley recalled the items flawlessly when an audience member tested her by surprise 20 minutes later.

The meeting's session was concluded with performances. Danny Reeves' performance of John Bannon's "4 Sided Gemini" was very entertaining.  In this routine, two of Reeves' audience volunteers mentally selected numbers, dealt cards down to their thought of numbers, inserted jokers into those spots, and completed the cuts.  Another card was randomly chosen.  Each of the volunteers' jokers ended up next to cards that were the SAME numbers.  These numbers matched a randomly selected card.  Even more amazing was that ALL three cards matched Reeves prediction card!!

"Skip" Way's take on the Tarbell "Mystery of the Traveling Numbers" routine was nothing short of phenomenal!  Way asked three spectators to each write down a number.  A dollar bill was borrowed.  When the spectators' numbers were multiplied together, the product matched the serial number on the borrowed dollar bill!!!

Tony Baro borrowed a driver's license from a spectator and CLEARLY exchanged his license for the volunteer's license.  Although the volunteer held Baro's license cupped in his hands in full view of the audience, Baro was able to switch the driver's licenses!

Upcoming Ring 199 events:  August - lecture by Joseph Daniels.  October - lecture by Kendrick "Ice" McDonald.

Ring 199 normally meets on the first Saturday of the month.  The exceptions for the remainder of 2016 will be September 10th, and November 12th.

MAGIC YOUTH RALEIGH

Eleven members attended the July Magic Youth Sessions. Roger Way led hands-on lessons covering Tarbell's Mathematical Mysteries and Effective Card Mysteries. Students and parents thoroughly enjoyed both lessons. The Tarbell "Mystery of the Traveling Numbers" presented at the RIng Meeting was taken from the Mathematical Mysteries lesson.

Our sincere thanks to Jon & Kelly Ferrante and The Magic Corner for hosting our youth sessions! Thanks also to Ring Members Tony Baro and Steve Perry for dropping by and offering their support as mentors. Couldn't do this without you!
