All Balboa Park Programs Information
Invite your friends to audition in August

Do you have friends who might like to join SDYS?  If so, invite them to register for an August audition.  Brass musicians are strongly encouraged!  The deadline to register is Monday, July 25, 2016 by 12 noon.  Click here to sign up.
Conservatory Program Placements

  • On Friday, July 1 ensemble placements and financial aid notifications were emailed to families. If you decide not to accept the offer of placement in SDYS, please contact Conservatory Program Coordinator, Kyle Henning at [email protected] to let him know.  Placement decisions are final and cannot be changed.

  • On Monday, August 1 tuition is due in order for us to hold your placement in SDYS. Payment options were outlined in the placement email. If you do not pay tuition by August 1, you will need to pay a $20 late fee in addition to tuition.  Please carefully read the appropriate 2016-2017 Musicians' Handbook before paying tuition and make sure you understand the attendance policy.  Tuition is non-refundable after September 1, 2016.

Rehearsals will be held on Sundays.
Debut Strings Class - 1:00 to 3:00pm (1:00-1:45pm Principles of Music)

Inspiration Program
Rehearsals will be held on Sundays.
Symphonic Strings -1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Overture Winds - 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Overture Strings - 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Showcase Program
Rehearsals will be held on Saturdays.
Wind Symphony - 8:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Sinfonia -10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Concert Orchestra - 1:00 to 3:15 p.m.
Concert Winds - 3:15 to 5:15 p.m.

Ovation Program
Rehearsals will be held on Saturdays.  Occasional, additional rehearsals are scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays.  Please check the Season Calendar for more information.
Wind Orchestra - 1:45 to 3:15 p.m.
Symphony Orchestra - 3:15 to 6:00 p.m.
Chamber Orchestra - 6:10 to 7:30 p.m.

Rehearsals will start on September 10 and 11, 2016.
Ovation Program begins Thursday, September 8 (Symphony Orchestra Strings Only)

International Youth Symphony

This Sunday, SDYS and Rotary District 5340 International Youth Exchange celebrate the 12th annual International Youth Symphony in Balboa Park. 22 international musicians from 12 countries will join 18 SDYS students to create a unique orchestra, comprised of talented student musicians led by SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons. Two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts will be shared with the community.

This year's performances include an outdoor concert as part of the Twilight in the Park in Spreckels Organ Pavilion, a Classical Concert at the Center Theater at California Center for the Arts in Escondido, and a performance at LJMS' summerfest.

General Information, Events, and Opportunities

The events listed below are for information only.

Musicians should not exceed the maximum permitted absences 
for participation in competitions, camps, or honor groups. 

It's not too late to join Thrive City's August 2016 Boot Camp!  Thrive City is a 10-day intensive retreat for string instrumentalists (intermediate to advance level), aimed at improving technique and building a strong foundation.  In addition to classical training, camp participants also get a chance to experience improvisation, seminars, creative workshops, dance, and other non-classical activities.  The camp will run between August 2-12 in Delta, British Columbia, Canada.

"The President's Own" United States Marine Band, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is pleased to announce its annual concerto competition for high school musicians.  The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the U.S. Marine Band and receive a $2,500 cash prize from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The runner up will receive a $500 cash prize.

The final round of the competition will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C. The final round is presented as a recital and is open to the public. The winner will perform in concert with the Marine Band at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Washington, D.C. area.
