2016 Summer Arts Festival
With the joint efforts of Virginia Tech's School of Performing Arts and the Town of Blacksburg, we are proud to present the  2016 Summer Arts Festival's Calendar of Events.  This summer marks our 25th anniversary of this cultural and entertaining event for the Virginia Tech Campus and the New River Valley!  This Festival has become a tradition that is now solidly established.  We have developed a very strong audience base for the Summer Arts Festival over the past 24 years, and with the renewed support of Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg, the Festival continues to be a welcome tradition to the university and the community.

Upcoming Events- Community Members
AARP
Sept. 14 will bring the AARP/VCOM Health and Wellness Fair to the Christiansburg Rec Center. This event will likely draw more than 500 people to exhibits, free flu shots, medical screenings, live demonstrations of healthy cooking and exercise and will include a number of DBI members.  There is also a focus on social engagement and the benefits of getting out and enjoying life!  DBI members who will be exhibiting include Tuck Chiropractic, Beliveau Vineyards, Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club, the Moss Arts Center, Warm Hearth Village, South Main Chiropractic, with others in the process of joining.  This will be a great way to reach new audiences and share information about your services.  The Health Fair is free to visitors and exhibitors pay from $100-$500, unless they are non-profit in which case it is free.  Proceeds support scholarships and AARP grants to non-profits in the area.  All of the organizing efforts are done by volunteers and the space is being donated by the Christiansburg Rec Center.  The Fair runs from noon to 4pm.  Interested in exhibiting?  Email Wendy Baldwin at [email protected] , Wendy is our AARP Blacksburg DBI representative.

Steady as You Go!  Information on Dizziness and Imbalance Disorders
Ever have a day when you feel dizzy and the room is spinning? Everyone has a dizzy spell now and then, but the term "dizziness" can mean different things to different people. For one person, dizziness might mean a fleeting feeling of faintness, while for another it could be an intense sensation of spinning (vertigo) that lasts a long time. Sandra Toensing, PA-C, a Physician Assistant currently practicing at Lewis Gale Physicians ENT in Blacksburg and Kelly Wilson, PT, DPT, a physical therapist with University Physical Therapy also in Blacksburg will discuss some of the types of balance disorders, symptoms, and treatments.

Art in the Garden Exhibit- Dr. Robert Lyons
Dr. Lyons has been a photographer for over 30 years and has published widely in homeowner, commercial, and educational publications (print and electronic), and is a primary photographer for Horticopia plant selection software.  He has exhibited his work nationally and has received awards from the Garden Writers Association of America for his photography and writings.  Lyons has taught photography workshops throughout the Philadelphia region, including Longwood Gardens, the Scott Arboretum, and Tyler Arboretum; as well as nationally in North Carolina, Ohio, Louisiana, and Virginia.

The Moss Arts Center
A selection of original works by award-winning artist P. Buckley Moss is on display through Aug. 7 in the Moss Arts Center's Sherwood Payne Quillen '71 Reception Gallery and Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery. " Sowing Seeds" provides a glimpse at a long and prolific career through the lens of rural vistas and vignettes.
 
Selections from Blacksburg sketch artist and painter Steven White, known as "Sketchy Steven," will be on display in the Moss Arts Center's Francis T. Eck Exhibition Corridor from through Aug. 14. In 2015, White challenged himself to paint one portrait a day using reference images from his sketchbooks and "Sktchy," a photo-sharing app. This installation chronicles White's struggles, revelations, and artistic development throughout the project, titled "100 Portraits."
 
Long-time Blacksburg resident Joe Kelley has developed a unique aesthetic sensibility, melding an enduring interest and immersion in the folk culture of Southwest Virginia with his knowledge of and experience with contemporary art and artists. See  his work in the Moss Art Center's Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery from July 14-Aug. 24.
 
Admission is free to all visual arts exhibitions.
