A Message from Our Director of Programs, Shannon Oreficé
Dear Friends,
I recently returned from the Big Brothers Big Sisters National Conference which was filled with impactful workshops, inspiring conversations, and thought-provoking presentations. While I learned so much, I was particularly moved by the words of keynote speaker, Wes Moore. He told the story of his challenges early in life and the obstacles he overcame after losing his father at a very young age. I was struck by the challenge that Wes brought to the room filled with BBBS staff and board members. He stated that we are always so focused on changing or trying to fix the problems that exist in many families in our communities - the high divorce rate, domestic violence, poverty - which are all important issues. However, he suggested that we should focus on changing the definition of family. Family can be the next door neighbor who shares meals with a struggling single mom; it can be the teenager who tutors a first generation child for free.
I walked away from that presentation inspired and ready to share that as members of society, it is our responsibility to take care of others in need, particularly children. We must protect them, encourage them to succeed in whatever they put their mind to, and go out of our way, out of the comfort of our own lives, and make a difference. We must change the definition of family.
We are always in need of positive adults in our community to apply to become Bigs and join our BBBS family. Who are the children we serve? This is a question that is difficult to answer since every child is unique and special. It is the 2-year-old boy in his car seat while his father drove around town selling drugs. This boy is now 8 living in an all-female household and just needs a man in his life to play catch with or talk to about his science project. It is the 11-year-old girl from Brazil whose parents don't speak English and they are trying to make ends meet while adjusting to a new culture. This girl really just wants someone to talk to and read books with. It is the 10-year-old boy who has been protecting and taking care of his 7 year old brother his entire childhood. It is now time for this boy to just be a kid himself - ride bikes with his Big Brother or go to the aquarium. Every child has their own personal story, and since joining BBBS 7 years ago, I see one constant in each of their stories. When they are matched with a Big, their story changes... they have a new member of their family that they know they can count on.
I urge you all to consider applying to be a Big Brother or Big Sister and to spread the word every chance you get. I believe it is a choice you will not regret. It is a choice that may change the path of a child's journey. It is a choice that may enrich your own life story.
Thank you,
Shannon Orefic_

Celebrating 4 Years of Friendship
Alana and Samantha at Carlos Bake Shop
Little Sister Alana with her Big Sister Samantha at Carlo's Bake Shop!
Big Sister Samantha and Little Sister Alana have reached the 4 year anniversary of their friendship this month! They enjoy going out to eat, working out together, or enjoying free movies on the beach in the summertime. Samantha helped Alana get a job this summer which is within walking distance to Alana's house. Their friendship is as strong as ever, and when we asked Alana to describe Samantha in three words she said, "I would need more than three words, but if I had to pick 3 I'd say: a great person."
Happy Anniversary

A Little Life is Waiting for a Big Change
Matthew just completed 4th grade and had an amazing year in school! He helped tutor students in younger grades and received Student of the Month twice. He loves to play soccer, ride bikes, skateboard, swim, and play outdoors. Matthew hopes his Big Brother is a nice person and that they can go bowling, play basketball and soccer, and go bike riding and on walks.
