German Pickle - inge glas Our Annual Pickle Hunt was on Saturday, July 23rd!  It was another successful scavenger hunt.  Almost all the pickles were found and a we gave away prizes totally over $300. This is always a fun event for adults, children, and the Tannenbaum Team.  We hope you will be able to join our Pickle Hunt next July!
Byers Choice
Byers Choice has added a new collection of snowmen (and snow women) call the Jolly Happy Souls.  These snow people are visitors from the North Pole and are all dressed in white and red.  The snowmen are wearing a variety of accessories including top hats, pipes, scarves, ties, canes, and coats.  The snow women are wearing skirts, bows, bonnets.  In their arms they come carrying gifts, skates, or toys.  These jolly people were born from the imagination of children and come bearing passports which includes the name and age of the child who inspired the snow person.  Please check them out and let us know what you think. As always, these snow people are made in the USA.

 Ginger Cottages
Tannenbaum is happy to introduce a new collection to our store, Ginger Cottages. Ginger Cottages are made in the USA from wood loaded with fine laser cut details. Each house can be lit from the bottom showing off the inside details of the house.  We also have two different display holders that include a battery operated light to make it easy to showcase these beautiful pieces in your home.

One of our favorite pieces is the "Door County" enscribed Lighthouse.  It features a beautiful simple lighthouse with a green and red wreath on the front. Somewhere hidden on the lighthouse is a telescope, compass, an oar, and maybe a skull and crossbones!  See what you can find because somewhere inside every cottage there is a Gingerbread Man and many more details to discover. There are 12 Gingerbread Men in Santa's Reindeer Barn for you to find.  There are almost always hidden shapes in the stones on the walkways and foundations to the cottages. Look closely, they are not easy to find!

Another fun set of houses are the dog houses.  We carry five special breeds: dachshunds, labs, poodles, scottish terrier, and the German shepherd.  These dog houses feature a very distinguished dog coming out of the dog house and a red fire hydrant near by.  The house is adored with dog bones and a pile of dog bones hidden inside the house!

Stop in and check out all the fun styles and details in these new houses.
Christmas Legends

Most of our customers have heard of the pickle legend and/or know there is something special behind this oranment, but there are other ornaments with Christmas legends or special meaning. For example the robin and hummingbird ornaments have special significance.

In addition to being the state bird of Wisconsin, legend has it that the robin was responsible for keeping the fire going during the night that Christ was born.  The story goes that Joseph built a fire in the stable to keep his family warm, but during the night the fire went out.  A little bird, the robin, flew down and fanned the embers with its wings. The bird flew so close that the fire that the heat turned the bird's breast feathers red.

The hummingbird is unique in that it can fly backwards, teaching us that we can look back at our past, but not dwell there and instead must continue moving forward.  Its ability to hover while drinking nectar serves as a lesson for us to savor each moment, while appreciating its sweetness.

Old World Christmas is just one of the companies that make a wide assortment in bird ornaments that we carry.
If you would like to add these birds to your ornament collection, please let us know.
Alpine Village
Alpspitze is part of the Bavarian Alps which separates Germany from Austria.  It's been described as the perfect holiday get-away and ideal German ski destination, due to the many beautiful Bavarian chalets that offer breathtaking Alpine views. The Department 56 artists have meticulously captured the charm of the Alpsitize inns with the darling Alpine Ski Lodge. Flower boxes, 2nd story balcony, and scalloped details on the window hoods and roof fascia are just part of the iconic elements found on this lodge. A friendly St. Bernard dog greets guests at the ski rental door. An outdoor fireplace of stone complete with roaring fire warms those coming off the mountain.  And every ski lodge needs to have skiers. This year's new accessory piece Love on the Slopes shows a man and a woman out for a morning ski session.

Hand knit sweaters are the ideal garment in the Alpine region (and in the Midwest during those cold winter nights). The warmest sweaters use wool sheered from local sheep. Thus, mills line the Alpine country side, utilizing falling mountain streams for the process of creating yarn from wool. The Alpen Woolen Mill features a turning water wheel which spins over the adjacent brook. Window boxes filled with sculpted greens and berries, along with sculpted garland and bows add a festive trim. To complete the scene consider adding on the Shepherding the Flock accessory piece.  Shepherding the Flock shows a shepherd herding three sheep with his trusty sheep dog.

Halloween Train
Department 56 has introduced a new train car in the Halloween collection for a mid-year release. "Scary Ghost Hauler" features a scary ghost on top of the train car and the lots of white smoke coming out of the car's windows.  Both the car and the accessory ghost catcher are lighted. (Accessory piece is battery operated.) We are currently taking orders for the train car "Scary Ghost Hauler" and accessory piece, "Scary Ghost Catcher" and will gladly ship your pieces to you when they arrive this Fall at the Tannenbaum.

The Tannenbaum Reading Corner
There are so many wonderful books at the Tannenbaum this year (we might have gone a little overboard).  This month we would like to highlight two exciting new books for our store The Day the Crayons Quit  and The Day the Crayons Came Home  by Drew Daywalt.  The Day the Crayons Quit contains letters from crayons to their owner, Duncan, describing the hardships the crayons have endured.  For example, the black crayon is tired of outlining everything and the orange and yellow crayon are fighting over who should be the color of the sun.

The Day the Crayons Came Home follows a similar format as the first book.  Again, the crayons have written letters to Duncan, their owner; however, this time the letters are regarding to crayons that have been left out of their box.  For example, the yellow and orange crayon describe melting in the sun, the maroon crayon was left in the couch, and the tan crayon was eaten by the dog.  These books are great for young children who are just learning their colors, older children who will appreciate the humor in the story, and for any adults who enjoys reading or a comical twist on life as a crayon.
