Dear Jung Society guest,
This Saturday July 16th we will have a super fun Potluck at a gorgeous house with the great creative, soulful people of Utah. The weather will be great and allow us to stroll in the garden and muse with each other.
We intend to continue in season 8, and we need your support in the form of being a member. Therefore, we coined it a members event, so members can come for free and non-members just need to enroll on the evening itself. You can bring a guest for free.
We hope to see you all there!

Love and Individuation
"Nothing is possible without love...for love puts one in a mood to risk everything."
- C.G. Jung
That same "shattering, emotional power" may also be found in love. Jung considered
Eros
to be a "kosmogonos
, a creator and father-mother of all higher consciousness."

Pop Psychology? Jungian Concepts in Popular Music: The Shadow
"The shadow personifies everything that the subject refuses to acknowledge about himself and yet is always thrusting itself upon him directly or indirectly."
- C.G. Jung
Heavy metal is caricatured and even promoted as being anti-religious because of the aggressively iconoclastic posturing of many of its devotees. But the explicit opposition to Christianity that some of the musicians and listeners claim is more complex than a simple moral depravity or hostility to goodness. Moral depravity and cruelty are too often cloaked in shows of righteousness and correctness in our world, and heavy metal is often motivated by conscientious objection to such hypocrisy. Black Sabbath's classic "
War Pigs" is a perfect example of this.

Projection:
You Are My Mirror and I Am Yours
"Projections change the world into the replica of one's own unknown face."
- C.G. Jung
Projections are images we have of others, which are generated by the psyche and based in our own fears, desires, impulses, and unresolved issues, most of which are unconscious. Jung
wrote, "We must bear in mind that we do not make projections, rather they happen to us."
Projection happens when we are "certain we know what other people think or what their true character is," and interact with with them based on those
assumptions.

Psychology of the Psychopath
Psychopathy is one of the most chilling and morally perplexing mental disorders we face. Much has been researched, but we are left with very little recourse that is of any help. Psychopaths are individuals who have no conscience and no remorse. They are intelligent and know how to work any system to their advantage. Therefore, there is little we can do to support those with the disorder in overcoming their disturbing, destructive, oftentimes violent tendencies. However, if we take a closer look, there is much that we can learn from the mental disorder of the psychopath.

African Wisdom Traditions and Individuation
"The process of individuation is founded on the instinctive urge of every living creature to reach its own totality and fulfillment."
- C.G. Jung
What does it mean to become who you truly are and live an authentic life? Carl Jung created the term
individuation
, describing it as a process in which one becomes aware of one's true, inner self. Jung believed that: "Man is not a machine that can be remodeled for quite other purposes as occasion demands, in the hope that it will go on functioning as regularly as before but in a quite different way. He carries his whole history with him; in his very structure is written the history of mankind."

The Art of Cowry Shell Divination with Malidoma Somé
|
|
"Where do we live symbolically? Nowhere except where we participate in the ritual of life."
- C.G. Jung
For those who have children and pay attention to them, observing their behavior is a gift of grace: an opportunity to re-connect with the rituals that meant the most to us as children, and hopefully to rediscover rituals that our souls may need again - or still.
Throughout his life, Dr. Jung sought not only to find and understand, but to enact what his soul needed to be whole. As an adult, he came to understand the importance of ritual and "
the symbolic life." In his work with his own unconscious he revived activities which he had dismissed as child's play.

Malidoma Som
é spoke about gift and purpose, and how "trouble" can serve as a guide that gives us direction along our individual path. Trouble can be "what pushes us to the edge, because the edge is where the psyche expands enough to awaken to our gifts...The blessing of trouble is that it hides an opportunity for healing."
