MESSAGE FROM PASTOR TIM

Dear Friends,

Selfie Sunday?

This Sunday is Single Service Sunday, and we will worship as one at 10:30 using a variety of music styles.  Our worship service will be preceded by a Potluck Breakfast hosted by our friends in the Outreach and Connections Ministry. There is a link below so you can sign up to bring something to share.  Our hope is that you will meet some new people on Sunday.   With over 600 people related to our congregation counting guests, friends and children, as well as members, chances are you don't know everyone.

And so we will celebrate Selfie Sunday.

I know that the whole Selfie (a self-portrait photograph, a photograph of oneself taken by oneself) thing has been criticized  as a little narcissistic, but how about a Selfie Sunday at church with a purpose?  You know that most members have a certain section of sanctuary real estate that they prefer;  and you know what they say about real estate?  Location, location, location.  Well on Sunday we want you to sit in your regular pew.  Yeah, I know, we don't have pews, but the word "pew" goes better with the sanctuary real estate concept. OK, sit in your regular seat.

Selfie Sunday?

With a little bit of luck (I mean providence) and some extra attendance, this act of sitting in your regular pew should create some dynamic conflict.   A  9:30 person may well find an 11:00 attendee sitting in his or her pew.  Or an 11:00 worshipper may find a 9:30 person in their spot.  Contrary to what some people think, a little low-level conflict is very healthy for a church.

Selfie Sunday?

Here's the assignment.  During the welcome time of the worship service, introduce yourself to the person who is invading your real estate.  Warmly shake their hand.   Whip out your cell phone (obviously set on silent) or a digital camera and take a selfie of you and the person sitting in your pew. Apparently you all have something in common.  Upload the photo to e-mail and send it to Admin@arkanddove.org, and we  will print and post the photo on a church bulletin board.  (If you bring a selfie stick please take care not to poke the eye of the person in the next row over.)  In the case of large familial groups, you could invite a third party to take the picture.  If your real estate is overrun with outsiders and you are forced to sit on the other side of the railroad tracks, please make your way over to your regular grazing grounds for this fellowship activity.  Although holy chaos could ensue, we are only allowing an extra two minutes for Selfies.

Peace be with you,
Tim

VERSE AND HOUSEHOLD PRAYER

He said to them, 'When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.' --Luke 11:2-4

Morning Prayer

Morning has broken, loving God - the shards of light scattering the long darkness of night.  Help me to carry into this day the sure knowledge of your grace, your steadfast love, and your great power to make paths where no way seems possible.  May I do your will in all my daily interactions so that your goodness is extended to more and more people.  I begin in thanksgiving for your glory all around.  Amen.

Evening Prayer

Spirit of God, come as the evening breeze, carrying away the cares and little failings of this day.  Help me put to rest the worries I have, the lists I keep, the regrets I weigh.  You know me through and through.  I cannot hide from you. May I lie down in peace tonight covered in your forgiveness,  love and redemption.  I pray in Christ's name.  Amen.

TES FOR YOU

This week, I hope you will join us for our Single Service Sunday at 10:30. The band, choir, and youth will combine to do the music for this service, so it's going to be a perfect blended morning.

Next week, some of our talented youth will be doing the music for the 9:30 service. I hope you will join us to hear a beautiful prelude, anthem and postlude that day.

Love,
Rebecca

FILMS AND DISCUSSION
ADULT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL What is the role of the Church? You are invited to Adult Vacation Bible School, July 31 through August 4, 6 pm to 8 pm. Departing from our usual routine, this year, we will be using videos as our discussion guide, so there will be far less reading.

SOME QUESTIONS WE WILL BE CONSIDERING:

*    What is the Church's role in the lives of individuals and families who no longer turn to it as the center of their social and family structure?
*    What is the Church's role in a world that increasingly sees it as irrelevant or even antithetical to human progress?
*    What is the Church's role in the lives of the people who continue to return to it as a source of strength, inspiration, solace and connection with God?
*   What is the Church's role in the lives of the people who have never walked through one of our doors and those who have sworn they never will again?
