Dear Friend of the BABC,
The vacation months of Summer may be here but we continue to be as busy as ever at the BABC Northern California.
Brexit has been at the forefront of everyone's mind. Chairman Colin Brown was interviewed on the referendum vote by the Washington Post and the San Francisco Business Times, links to both articles may be found in the BABC news section. In addition, some of you may have seen Colin interviewed by local Bay Area station ABC7 for a news segment. Below, you will see additional articles from our members concerning Brexit.
Our continued thanks go out to Hotel Vitale for hosting our monthly Young Professionals Happy Hour at the Americano Restaurant and Bar. The Young Professionals Committee were delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to this month's event on July 12th, which is becoming an increasingly popular networking go-to gathering. Guests represented a variety of industries including education, tech, travel blogging, real estate, finance and media. The Happy Hour takes place every SECOND Tuesday of the month and affords Bay Area's young professional community the opportunity to connect and network with their peers.
We were honored to present a Farewell Fireside Chat with HM Consul General Priya Guha on the 14th of this month. Priya reflected on her five years in the Bay Area and answered questions from moderator Sean Randolph of the Bay Area Council Economic Institute. Over 75 members and guests attended the prestigious event and had their own opportunity to ask Priya questions ranging from her views on Brexit, her thoughts on business in the Bay Area, and what has surprised her most about her time on the West Coast. Our tremendous thanks to the event sponsors BABLeap, LoopUp, Silicon Valley Bank, Goldschmidt Vineyards and Squire Patton Boggs. The full summary of the event may be read here here.
Finally, thank you to all the new members who have joined the BABC over the last month and to all of our members showing their continued support of our growing organization by renewing and upgrading your memberships. Please take a moment to visit their websites and learn more - they may be able to help you!
Best, Nick Unkovic President, BABC Northern California

H.M. Consul General to San Francisco
Ms. Priya Guha
My column this month is bittersweet. I have had the privilege of serving as HM Consul General to San Francisco for the past five years. But sadly my tenure ends this month.
I'm going back to London. Events of the past few weeks mean it's quite a different place from when I left. Firstly, we have a new Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Teresa May MP. And secondly, the UK public has voted to leave the European Union.
Prime Minister May brings significant political experience to the role, having served as Home Secretary for 6 years and MP for Maidenhead since 1997. She will provide strong and stable leadership at an important moment in the UK's history. Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change. But we will rise to the challenge. As PM May said in her inaugural remarks yesterday, we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world, and we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us. And personally, I'm delighted that we now have the UK's second female Prime Minister (before the US even has its first)!
We're already seeing the results of these decisions and leadership. The markets have rallied with the announcement of the new Prime Minister. The FTSE 100
hit an 11 month high this week; Sterling is back up to 1.34 against the US dollar; and S&P 500 hit an all time high. The
UK economy is strong and we are open for business.
On a personal note, I'd like to thank you all for your support over these past five years. And I look forward to seeing you in London!

BABC Chairman Colin Brown on BREXIT - EU/UK Institutions and history point to what comes next
A few weeks ago I wrote a post on Brexit - a snapshot of events leading up to the June 23rd referendum and a few (hopefully) objective comments on the situation facing the UK, as a reminder: 1. Brexit hasn't happened (yet), while the referendum cannot be ignored, there is time to shape what Brexit really means for the UK and EU; 2. Two years of post-exit negotiations are likely. Year 1 painful, and Year 2 more productive (see below for the reasons why); 3. Bravely working towards a brighter future was the only way for the UK to proceed, leaving behind a negative narrative of disappointment. After being interviewed by ABC7, the San Francisco Business Times, and subsequently by the Washington Times it was clear that there was real lack of awareness in the US about the EU, and the attempt by David Cameron to secure concessions from the EU in Q1 2016 before a referendum took place. David Cameron sough to address border control, and judicial independence while maintaining market access as a member state - this failed.

Hogan Lovells
- Brexit Effect: the legal implications behind the headlines
The Journey Begins. Unravelling the Uncertainty.
The waiting is over. The UK has spoken. The UK will leave the European Union.
Brexit will not happen immediately and the UK Government now needs to decide when it will serve notice and trigger the two-year exit negotiation period. The process is unprecedented and uncertain. On Brexit taking effect, all existing UK trading arrangements with the EU and, through its EU membership, with the rest of the world will lapse unless replacements are agreed. The agreement of all 27 Member States will be required to agree an extension. As alternative arrangements to membership will need to be agreed it is not yet certain what "Leave" will look like - but it is clear that it will be important for UK plc to understand its potential impact and engage with the negotiation process. Negotiations and capacity constraints will mean that priorities and potential compromises need to be identified by the UK Government (and its counterparts), as well as decisions on which trading arrangements with new or existing markets to progress. Engagement begins with understanding how it will affect your business. This impartial analysis supports that process by assessing the implications of Brexit on the legal structures which currently underpin a variety of sectors.

In last week's referendum, UK voters opted to leave the European Union. While the long-term consequences of Brexit are uncertain, the global markets saw significant volatility in the wake of the historic vote. According to Raymond James Chief Economist Scott Brown, "This isn't a Lehman-type event. While the UK economy faces the likelihood of slower growth, financial market volatility should begin to settle down soon."

Our thanks to Simon Elliot and Aramark/BABC Task Force.
In addition to the very generous proceeds from the BABC 2015 Christmas Luncheon Live Auction, thank you to Stuart Bagshaw and family, we have added a further $15,000 in Grants and proceeds from events such as "A Jolly Good Day At the Races" hosted at Golden Gate Fields, Berkeley back in May.
To date this year we have raised nearing $60,000 for this wonderful cause. In addition, we saw generous donations of family experience tickets to The Bay Area Discovery Museum, The Aquarium of The Bay, The Walt Disney Museum, de Young Museum, The Children's Creativity Museum, and Community Access Ticket Services will also be joining forces with Raphael House to give these families the opportunity to spend quality family time at some of the top family attractions in San Francisco - Thanks to Stephanie Elliot for making this happen and to the organizations who so generously donated.
