LBCC celebrates Black History Month
|
|
February is Black History Month and Linn-Benton Community College is Honoring the Voices of Black LGBTQ+ Literaries. As has been the case with most things this year, all of the lectures have been virtual, but that has presented an exciting opportunity.
“I've been able to use people outside of Oregon to get their perspective,” said Ramicia McGhee, a Professor of English & Literature at LBCC. “Kelly [Tonina Cooper] is from Atlanta, Michael J. [Cleveland] of course is local, and Dr. [Crystal] Rudds is in Utah. So that's been a really beneficial thing because otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to get them here.”
If you missed any of the lectures, you can watch them here:

Britney Cawrse: 'You can always learn a new skill'
|
Britney Cawrse would like to say there’s nothing unusual about being a woman in Linn-Benton Community College’s machine tool technology program. But given she was the only one this past academic year—and there was only one, on average, in recent years before that—she concedes most women don’t appear to be making that choice.

LBCC Business Students Shine at World Championship: ‘We were there for a reason’
|
MikesBikes, a business simulation, is part of the business administration curriculum at LBCC. The goal is for students to run their own bike shop and not only gain as much market share as possible, but also to increase their shareholder value. For the students who did the best, that meant the opportunity to compete on a bigger stage.

Michelle Kobold: ‘I’ve kind of come full circle and I just love that’
|
10 years ago the unthinkable happened. Michelle Kobold was laid off from her position at Western Oregon University. Kobold was already living in Albany, so she decided to enroll in Linn-Benton Community College’s Visual Arts Program. “I’m just like, it’s the perfect opportunity to just jump in and do it,” Kobold said. “I am so grateful I did that because it has helped me in so many different ways career-wise.”

Jennifer Clayton: 'Never been a better time to learn'
|
Jennifer Clayton wouldn’t wish it on anybody, but the current global pandemic actually turned out to be a great real-world lesson for her Diagnostic Imaging Program students.

Did You Know? LBCC Makes College Possible.
|
|
Do you know someone who is considering college but unsure whether they can actually make it happen? LBCC works mightily on behalf of its students to remove barriers. Just a few highlights:
- The LBCC Foundation gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships every year, and can assist any interested student through the process. In addition, the State of Oregon awards over $100 million in grants to students.
- Our Roadrunner Resource Center is completely dedicated to helping students who face life challenges -- from hunger to transportation to technology access to childcare -- with the right financial and social resources so they can stay on track and in school.
- Since 2015, our faculty have saved students more than $6.5 million by adopting Open Educational Resources (OER) and other free materials to greatly lighten the load of paying for textbooks.
- LBCC has partnered with College Housing Northwest, and Affordable Rents for College Students (ARCS), to offer a Housing Assistance Pilot Program.
- Roadrunner Resources and the Foundation work with Advanced Transportation Technology Center on a limited case by case basis to fix student cars.
- Current LBCC students can ride the bus for free with LBCC ID cards.

Each edition of "Beaks Briefing" features an interview with a former LBCC athlete. February's Alumni Spotlight features Seth Brown, a baseball player with the Oakland Athletics. Brown played at LBCC for two seasons. He was named First-Team All-Southern Region by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges as a sophomore. Brown then transferred to Lewis–Clark State College where he helped lead the Warriors to the 2015 NAIA World Series.

Miranda Dudzik, a former biology instructor at Linn-Benton Community College, passed away in late January. Miranda worked at LBCC until the summer of 2019 and subsequently worked for the OSU College of Agriculture. During her time as a Roadrunner, Miranda was instrumental in the creation of the Part-Time Faculty Association (PTFA). Miranda would go on to become the PTFA President in 2017, a role she served in for two years. A virtual memorial service is being held on Wednesday, February 24th at 5:00 pm to celebrate Miranda's life.
