When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2: 1- 4 (NIV)

NEW - FAQs About Reopening
Last week, the UNY Conference published a news item overviewing reopening guidelines with a link to view an up-to-date comprehensive guide to help local churches understand when they can open and resume services. Since then, we have been getting some questions.

Click here for a compilation of the Frequently-Asked-Questions with answers. If you have a question related to reopening, feel free to contact our COVID-19 hotline at (315) 898-2012 or [email protected] and someone will contact you and add the question and answer to our compilation.
Message from Suzanne
Over the last month these are some of the words and phrases that seem to cross my path almost on a daily basis: unprecedented times, daily COVID19 updates by the governors that include the number of hospitalizations and deaths, flatten the curve, frustration, protests, anger, fear, essential and frontline workers, sleepless nights, loneliness, grieving and the question, "How long...?" The weight of this event on my shoulders becomes unbearable at times.

Then, I turn off the news and social media. It is time to sit quietly and listen for the Holy Spirits leading. God's Word enters my mind. With a deep breath and a sigh of relief I am reassured that God is with me. And I remember, Jesus telling the disciples, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." The weight upon my shoulders is lifting. Please click here to read Pastor Suzanne's message in its entirety.
NEW - Imagine No Racism Approved as Advanced LSM Course
Great news for Lay Servant Ministries! Imagine No Racism (INR) has been approved as an advanced course for Upper New York. The curriculum, which has a deeply spiritual foundation, has been formatted as a 10-hour course including videos, conversations, and experiential learning. An INR facilitator will lead each course. Each District has at least three trained facilitators who will guide the conversation as the participants experience vital concepts dealing with racism in today's world.

The goal of this experience is to develop each lay servant's ability to be an ally who walks with people of color to build relationships and take action for justice.

Stay connected to the Conference and District communications platforms for more details to come.

Living Out the Church's Purpose
The purpose and mission of every United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches and New Faith Communities are where disciples are made. Upper New York Director (UNY) of New Faith Communities, the Rev. Dave Masland, said, "In 2019, more than 60 percent of the churches in Upper New York reported that they did not have a single Profession of Faith! That is the definition of an organization struggling to live its purpose."

Upper New York Area Resident Bishop Mark J. Webb and the UNY Conference Leadership Team, the UNY Cabinet, and the UNY Operational Team have continue work on "Discovering, Developing, and Deploying Christ-Following Leaders." Click here to learn more about the new tools to effectively fulfill their vision for 2025.

In-Person Worship Suspended Through May 31
In accordance with the continued response to COVID-19 pandemic, the Upper New York (UNY) Conference local churches are strongly encouraged to continue to refrain from having in-person worship services through May 31. Recognizing that the New York Governor has placed drive-in theatres as a part of businesses that can open within Phase 1 of the states re-opening guidelines, we support any churches that desire to offer drive-in worship experiences within regions that are in Phase 1 of New York's reopening guidelines until in-person worship within our buildings can resume. It is vital that guidelines be followed closely if a church decides to offer drive-in worship and that the building not be opened or available for access in any way. You can find guidelines, as well as resources, for drive-in worship experiences here .
News of Our Denomination

General Conference
The Commission on the General Conference has announced new 2021 dates for General Conference following the postponement of the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The quadrennial legislative event will take place on August 29 - September 7, 2021, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

In making the announcement, the Commission expressed regret that they were not able to accommodate a request from a group of young delegates regarding the reported dates of the postponed General Conference. The group asked the Commission to not schedule meeting dates that would conflict with the start of the academic year in the U.S. They cited concerns that the timing would disproportionately affect young leaders and hinder their participation, as well as that of educators who might not be able to take off work at that time.

However, the Commission did take steps to address a second request contained in a letter from the young adult group to consider alternative methods of accommodating full participation, including utilizing technology to enable virtual voting.
