Sadly, Armin Fuchs, Ph.D., passed away in the early hours on Saturday, June 29 after valiantly struggling to overcome cancer which ultimately, and suddenly, took his life. Dr. Fuchs was a Professor in the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences and the Department of Physics. His passing is a significant loss for both programs. Those who knew him well knew him to be a gentleman, a good friend, a very talented scientist and teacher. Dr. Armin Fuchs will be dearly missed, although his legacy lives on in his writings, his work and through his students. Our condolences and thoughts are with his family and his friends.
Alex Keene, Ph.D., an associate professor of biological sciences in FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science recently served as a lead instructor of a fly-centric course titled, Drosophila Neurobiology: Genes, Circuits & Behavior. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory hosted the course June 28-July 18. The course provided a comprehensive and practical introduction to modern experimental methods for studying the neural basis of behavior in Drosophila.

Bethany Stahl, a post-doctoral fellow served as a speaker sharing gila's historical background and demonstrating Drosophila antennal ablation to study Wallerian degeneration.

Elizabeth Brown, a post-doctoral fellow also demonstrated Proboscis Extension Reflex (PER) and the measuring aversive taste memory in Drosophila.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory recently featured, Roberto Hernandez, a member of the lab of Gregory Macleod, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. The second-year graduate student shared his current research and how he will apply what he learned during a fly-centric course titled, Drosophila Neurobiology: Genes, Circuits & Behavior.
CBS12 News recently featured the 'Brain Sparks' program that will be offered at the STEM Studio in downtown Abacoa! Explore the brain with neuroscientists from Florida Atlantic University's Brain Institute and Advancing STEM Community Engagement Through Neuroscience Discovery(ASCEND) program. Brain Sparks, is a one-day camp for students going into grades 6-8. It will be held on two dates, July 20 and August 24, in collaboration with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium and the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation.

Florida Atlantic University serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students at sites throughout its six-county service region in southeast Florida. FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus , located in downtown Abacoa offers a variety of upper-division and graduate course. The campus houses the Academy for Community Inclusion , Center for Autism and Related Disabilities , College of Education , Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College , John D. MacArthur Campus Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute , the largest lifelong learning program in the nation. FAU Jupiter unites scientists and students in research and training programs and leverages FAU’s close affiliations with Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute , also located on the campus. As part of this effort, the university-wide Brain Institute launched in 2016 and is a hub of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary neuroscience activity that builds on existing neuroscience centers and programs within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine , Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology offers research and training programs in molecular biology and biotechnology and serves as a link between FAU and other institutions and industries in this field.
