Breaking and Mending
Finding beauty in imperfection

It's spring and green shoots are breaking through the muddy ground and moving toward the light. New growth is everywhere. Last Saturday in the Down to Earth Studio we did our own version of breaking and emerging to let the light shine in.
Eleven of us gathered around the table in the studio, kindred spirits joined together to create soulful art. First, we made an altar of our personal tokens and totems with the Grandmother Kintsugi Bowl at the center. Mary* told the magical legend of the ancient Japanese art of  repairing broken pottery with gold called Kintsugi As a philosophy,  Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. It  encompasses a philosophy of living, of finding beauty within the imperfections of life, and peacefully accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.
We each wrote about life experiences that had broken us in some way -- a broken heart, a broken body, or a broken spirit. Then, we listed attributes that we'd gained from those experiences: compassion, understanding, listening, loving more fully, all the ways the breakage had cracked us open to let more light shine into our hearts and minds.
Our bowls became a metaphor for our lives. We held them in the palms of our hands and breathed into their beautiful wholeness. One by one we broke our bowls. Then, we picked up the pieces, sorted them out, and glued them back together with patience and commitment, and carefully painted the fault lines with gold to highlight the cracks. When the mending was over and our bowls were whole again, we listened with open hearts to each woman's story, filling the studio with laughter and tears. Finally, we placed the bowls on the altar, sat back and celebrated the beauty of our vulnerability and resilience.
Here's to women of a certain age who have the courage to speak their truth. Here's to women of a certain age who come together to honor the beauty of their brokenness, who mend and heal, and become wiser and more loving, not in spite of, but because of, their imperfections. Women who trust that coming together in sacred ceremony changes ourselves and ripples out to change the world. A-ho! Blessed be!

Want to Create Your Own Kintsugi Bowl Ceremony?
The next time a treasured bowl or vase breaks, why not repair it and paint the cracks with gold? Here are some journal prompts you can start with to find the treasure in your Kintsugi vessel:

When I look at this bowl...
Each golden fault line....
What I've misunderstood about perfection is...
What I know about beauty is...
What I know about forgiveness is...

Life can (and probably will!) break us along the way. May you find your way toward mend ing and healin g.

From my creative heart to yours,
P.S.   Email me  for help (best glue, best gold paint to use, etc.), or to schedule a Kintsugi bowl cerem o ny for your friends, women's group, or just for yourself. I would be honored to share this with you.

And...here is a link to something special just for you.

Spring
by Beloved Poet, Mary Oliver

Somewhere
a black bear
has just risen from sleep
and is staring
down the mountain.

All night
in the brisk and shallow restlessness
of early spring
I think of her,
her four black fists
flicking the gravel,
her tongue
like a red fire
touching the grass,
the cold water.

There is only one question:
how to love this world.
I think of her
rising
like a black and leafy ledge
to sharpen her claws against
the silence
of the trees.

Whatever else
my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its glass cities,
it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;
all day I think of her --
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.
