The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has selected Alex Keene, Ph.D., associate professor of biological sciences in Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, to participate in the 30th Annual U.S. Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium (KFoS) scheduled from Feb. 28 to March 2.

Attendance at the KFoS symposium is by invitation only. Attendees are selected from among award winners for early career scientists in the U.S. and abroad.

Keene, a neuroscientist who is focused on understanding the neural basis through which sleep and feeding state interact, is only the second FAU faculty member to be named a Kavli Fellow.

Amanda Barstow is the 2019 winner of a $10,000 seed grant to launch her social enterprise, Daisy, which is designed to provide feminine hygiene products to at-risk clients, particularly homeless women.

David Gorski also won $2,500 to start his social venture, Life-Metrics, a mobile app platform that establishes quantitative connections between health, usage data and psychological/physical well-being.
Science is the best weapon against cancer. A number of labs across FAU have joined the fight, investigating aspects of the disease and potential means to prevent it. Now, the university is seeking to connect these independent efforts, an initial step in a longer term plan to develop a center for research and cancer care.

“We are systematically looking at the cancer research already underway at the university to see how these efforts could best be coordinated,” said Gregg Fields, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who is leading this effort. “The big picture is thinking about how we take discoveries from our labs and find ways to implement them to treat patients.”

Hello Colleagues and Friends,

As a reminder, this coming Sunday, March 3, we will be supporting Autism Speaks as team Neurosquad again for the annual Autism Speaks walk at Meyer Amphitheater in West Palm Beach from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (walk starts at 10 a.m.).

Participation is free, and friends/family members (and dogs) are welcome. Free Neurosquad T-shirts to all who attend!

If you are unable to join us, please consider supporting us on our team page. We hope to meet team Neurosquad's fundraising goal of $1000!

Please join us to support Autism Speaks and brain science! We look forward to seeing you there!

Kind regards,
