LOVE ONE ANOTHER
25 June 2021 Volume 78
June 22, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am sure someone has asked you “Are you a person who sees the glass half-full or half-empty?” The question is often a reference to whether your worldview is pessimistic or optimistic. I mention this because yesterday was the first day of summer and I should have been rejoicing in the fact that I now have 90 days of gloriously warm weather and the ability to shed those extra layers of clothing. Instead, I was thinking, “Oh my; winter is only six months away.” However, on the first day of winter, I do not say, “Hey, great! Summer is just six months away.” I guess you could say I am a “glass-half-empty” type of guy, at least when it comes to the seasons. Perhaps growing up in the Midwest, when a lingering memory of that below-zero thermometer follows a beautiful summer day, always makes me feel that winter is just around the corner.

I do not think that I am always a “glass-half-empty” person; it just depends on the subject matter. In sports, I am always a glass-half-full type of person. In my freshman year, I played on a small college basketball team that ended the season 4-22, not exactly a national ranking prospect. We had less than 300 boys in the college, but every game that we played I entered the game with the sense of winning, not losing. Some may call me unrealistic – David going against Goliath – but David did win one, and we did win at least those four games.

In the realm of spirituality, I can only be a glass-half-full person. No matter what difficulty I have encountered during my lifetime, God’s hand has always been present. I constantly see the blessings that our benevolent God has bestowed. I am not saying that everything has always gone my way because it has not. However, as I assessed the trying situations, the glass was always at least half-filled with moments of trust that fulfilled God’s plan. God often inspired my trust through the witness of brothers and sisters to Christ by bearing the burdens of sufferings in His love. If I were focusing on the half-empty side of things, I would have missed those providential actions that filled half the glass. Besides, it is not a half-empty tomb that we celebrate on Easter. We celebrate a fully resurrected Jesus who offers life and gives us His Church.

Always remember that there can be nothing half-empty in our actions when we express how we LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

Sincerely,

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki
Archbishop of Milwaukee

Pope Francis: The humble service of a deacon tells of the greatness of God
Vatican City, Jun 19, 2021 / 07:05 am

Pope Francis met with deacons and their families Saturday at the Vatican and encouraged them to help their parishes to recognize Jesus in the poor. “Deacons remind the Church that what Saint Thérèse discovered is true: the Church has a heart inflamed by love. Yes, a humble heart beating with service,” the pope said June 19.
“The generosity of a deacon, who gives of himself without seeking the front ranks, has about him the perfume of the Gospel. He tells of the greatness of God's humility in taking the first step … to meet even those who have turned their backs on him,” he said.

The pope welcomed deacons from the diocese of Rome to the Vatican’s Hall of Blessings, where he expressed to each of them the importance of their distinct ministry in the life of the Church.
“The decrease in the number of priests has led to a prevailing engagement of deacons to substitute them in tasks which, however important, do not constitute the specific nature of the diaconate. They are substitute tasks,” he said.

Pope Francis cited the dogmatic constitution, Lumen Gentium, which describes the diaconate a ministry in which “hands are imposed not unto the priesthood, but unto a ministry of service.”
He said: “The Council, after speaking of service to the People of God ‘in the diaconate of the liturgy, of the word and of charity”, emphasize that deacons are above all - above all - “dedicated to duties of charity and of administration (Lumen Gentium, 29).’”
“The phrase recalls the early centuries, when deacons looked after the needs of the faithful, especially the poor and the sick, in the name and on behalf of the bishop. We can also draw on the roots of the Church of Rome.”

The pope encouraged the deacons to follow Christ by embracing his “logic” of lowering oneself.
“We are all called to lower ourselves, because Jesus stooped to us, He made himself the servant of all. If there is one great person in the Church, it is the one who made him- or herself the smallest, and servant of all,” Pope Francis said. “I expect you to be humble. It is sad to see a bishop and a priest showing off, but it is even sadder to see a deacon wanting to put himself at the center of the world, or at the center of the liturgy, or at the center of the Church. Be humble. Let all the good you do be a secret between you and God. And so it will bear fruit,” he said.

Deacons can also serve the community through their witness as good spouses, fathers, and grandfathers.
“This will give hope and consolation to couples who are going through difficult times and who will find in your genuine simplicity an outstretched hand,” he said.

The pope added: “Doing everything with joy, without complaining; this is a testimony that is worth more than many sermons.”
Deacons can act as “sentinels” for their parish, he said, by helping “to help the Christian community to recognize Jesus in the poor and the distant, as He knocks on our doors through them.”
“Whatever the need, see the Lord. So you, too, recognize the Lord when, in so many of his little brothers and sisters, He asks to be fed, to be welcomed and loved. I would like this to be the profile of the deacons of Rome and of the whole world,” Pope Francis said.

Balance our Budget

Our fiscal year ends June 30th and there are only a few days left to close the gap in our budget shortfall at St. Clare. This past year Mass attendance decreased along with offertory contributions. The inability to hold any special events, which bring in revenue, also contributed to our shortfall. But we continued to function and offer our ministries. Thank you for whatever you can contribute. Thank you to St. Clare and St. Thomas parishioners who have already made a contribution. We are so blessed!
We would like to highlight and thank a few of our loyal sponsors in each email.
St. Thomas and St Clare thanks you very much!
